Some Sit & Go tournaments are indeed the beginning of a larger satellite tournament. A satellite tournament is the means by which a player can play in a small tournament and win tickets for entrance to a larger tournament. This process is continued for 3 or 4 tournaments until the winner of the final tournament wins a ticket and package to one of the major land based tournaments, such as the World Series of Poker. The World Series of Poker is where the best players in the world battle it out for an estimated $20,000,000 total prize sum.
