Rumors swirling around the internet are saying that professional poker David Williams once starred in a scandalous porn movie. Clips and images from the movie are beginning to circulate on the web and it remains unclear whether the scandal will hurt Williams’ image in the poker world.
Though the identity of the person in the movie cannot be confirmed, many believe that the actor named Tony in the film is in fact Williams. Tony is Williams’ middle name and the physical features of the person in the X-rated flick bear a striking resemblance to one of poker’s rising stars.
Williams first burst onto the poker scene in the 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event – where he finished second to Greg “Fossilman” Raymer and walked away with $3.5 million. He followed his success in the 2004 WSOP main event with a second place at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Borgata Open just months later. Williams is now a spokesman for an online poker site along with Josh Arieh who ironically enough was one the people who criticized Williams’ play in the 2004 WSOP main event. Both Williams and Arieh are considered among the best young poker players in the world today.
Before making his mark in the poker world, Williams’ was just another college whiz kid – with an apparent liking for porn. Williams received acceptance letters from many of the top universities in the country and decided to attend Princeton. He would ultimately leave New Jersey to move closer to his mother and earn his economics degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
His mother’s presence at the 2004 WSOP helped to establish Williams’ momma’s boy reputation and set him apart from his peers, many of whom boldly proclaimed that they would take over the poker world. Williams didn’t exhibit the same youthful cockiness that some of the younger players at the WSOP displayed. Williams’ starring role in a seedy porn movie, however, may change people’s perceptions about him.
But it’s doubtful it will hurt his marketability. He should continue to work as an online poker spokesman and receive offers from people who want him to endorse their products.
The only questions surrounding the porn scandal have to do with whether Williams understood the possible consequences of his actions. At the time of the movie’s filming, Williams probably didn’t even think about what he was getting into.
In his defense, it’s important to realize he probably couldn’t have imagined he would become as famous as he is today. He was simply another college kid who happened to be living out one of his adolescent dreams, to star in a pornographic film. If given the opportunity, it’s hard to say that any sexually charged, twenty-something year old male would be able to pass up that opportunity.
Unfortunately for Williams, he did become famous and now everybody knows he once starred in an X-rated movie. Poker players today are seen as celebrities and that’s the reality of the world. They’re in the public eye and can’t get away with anything. Every move they make and every word they say will be scrutinized.
Williams’ might not be happy that the movie leaked out to the public, but at least he can say he’s no momma’s boy.
