I just watched a well known poker pro's DVD on how to get a great tell on your opponent, on and off line. I thought I would share some of her tips with you guys. She tells how she spoke with FBI interrogators on how to tell a sure liar when you see one.
The first tip when to tell if some one is bluffing is there eyes, which is the reason most pros wear sunglasses, you can tell someone is bluffing when before they act they usually will have a extensive blink, or batting their eyes is also a sign of a liar. Body posture (also a good one), if they appear to be uncomfortable, or have aggressive posture. Also there facial expressions - pursing of the lips or also biting lips. She also discussed how they place there chips in the pot, she says that if a player slams there chips in the pot as opposed to sliding them in they are most likely bluffing. I also really noticed this tip - when men are uncomfortable they place their hand on their chin, and when women are uncomfortable they place their hand on there neck. Liars also tend to grimace right before they tell a lie-they show a slight smile right before they speak, and I also learned people who lie tend to sooth themselves in a physical way such as stroking hands together or leg etc. Also if a player gets dealt a big hand they may react in a way as if they aren't paying attention by saying "oh is it my turn?" or maybe saying something like "oh I guess I'll play this hand."
Online is a bit more difficult to get tells on your opponents, the number one way is betting patterns. Are the players playing tight?, Are they raising every hand? How much are they betting when they have a hand, how much are they betting when they are trying to steal. Are they always betting on the button?
These are all great ways in getting to know your opponents cards online. Also how they chat, someone who chats alot then stops after they just folded a hand in a big pot after the flop are often mad at themselves for trying to bluff someone out of a pot. Or someone who is kind of quiet at that table the whole time gets you to lay down your hand and after they start typing away, could be a sign of someone who is happy they out played you, or they could just be happy cause they won a pot. You never really will know a players hand unless they show you, but these tips can always give you a good idea of who bluffing and who's not. Hope these tips are helpful to you. And Thank You Annie Duke for spreading your knowledge to us all. And Good Luck to everyone :)))
