Fire Department’s Poker Run For Local Charity

June 9, 2006

When it comes to raising money for a local charity, the Walker County Fire Department wanted to combine two of their favorite things: motorcycles and Seven Card Stud Poker.

The inaugural poker run is scheduled for this Saturday, and Sgt. Donnie Brown is hoping the run will double last year’s donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“If this is a success, we will continue to do this. Everybody has enjoyed doing the boot drive, but we wanted to spice things up a little bit,” explained Brown. “We wanted to add something else not only to spice things up but to raise more money.”

Participants in the poker run will get a card at the beginning of the race and will receive five cards along the race at different check-points. At the end of the race, each rider will get one final card – the people with the top three Seven Card Stud Poker hands will be awarded prizes, even the person with the lowest poker hand will walk away with away with a prize. But the real prize of the day will be helping raise money for an important their cause – the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“It’s for the kids,” explained Brown. “Our whole goal is to send them to camp, let them have fun and buy them wheelchairs and leg braces.”

It only costs $25 to join the event, and in addition to donating to a great cause everyone walks away with a T-shirt, a stomach-full of barbeque and an ear-full of music from live entertainment. Brown added that many local businesses have been more than happy to donate money to the event.

“We always have a set goal of $5,000,” he said. “So far in sponsorships, we’ve got $6,000. It’s a donation, but we’re giving them advertising (on the T-shirts).”

If you’re interested in joining The Walker County Fire Department poker run be at the Walker County Civic Center at 10 a.m. to pay $25 to registration fee and expect to depart at 11:30 a.m.
