Poker Players Alliance Research Shows American Support for Online Poker

May 1, 2006

There are a lot of Americans upset by the government’s laws against operating online poker sites from U.S. soil and The Poker Players Alliance wants to be their voice and stand up to Congress. The grassroots organization currently boosts a membership of 20,000 American poker players, and they are not slowing down in their quest to kill the government’s prohibition on internet gambling.

To outline the need for change, The Poker Players Alliance recently conducted a survey asking nearly 1,000 American adults for their viewpoint on the legal issues surrounding internet gambling. The study concluded that 75 percent of Americans are against the moves made by Congress to prohibit online gambling.

"The new poll results are a clear illustration of the public's feelings on this issue. Simply put, people don't want their member of Congress telling them what they can and cannot do in their own home -- especially when it comes to a game that's as all-American as jazz or basketball," explained Michael Bolcerek, the president of the Poker Players Alliance.

Within the 20,000 members of the group, there are prominent people in the poker industry that support the non-profit organization, including professional poker players like Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson and Greg Raymer and Radley Balko. The group believes that frowning upon online poker creates a Big Brother effect; they believe Americans have the right to gamble online in the privacy of their own home if they choose to.

"We are here today to speak about the growing threat to poker as it relates to the online game," said Bolcerek. "We are here to defend the game and express our opposition to Congress' efforts to kill the sport and restrict our civil liberties."

The Poker Players Alliance’s survey was conducted on March 29, 2006 by independent market research group. Participates were asked seven poker related questions and were asked to give yes or no answers.
