Many people are well aware of the charity work that major sport leagues like the NFL, MLB and NBA perform, but poker has done a lot to help a wide range of people in all areas of need. As much as is being done, there is still more good that could be gained for charities across the country and at the same time, help online poker’s reputation on the political stage.
A recent World Series of Poker victory secured by professional poker player and WPT host Mike Sexton, brought poker’s potential to the forefront. Mike Sexton donated half of his prize money to five different charities after winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions to start off this year’s version of the WSOP. Not only did he donate money, Mike Sexton also spoke in detail about the good poker can do for communities and for the image of poker itself.
One of the charities that benefited from the WPT announcer’s win was The Children Incorporate. This non-profit group already receives a generous portion of poker great, Barry Greenstein's winnings. The charity provides food and school supplies for underprivileged children from around the world.
Employees of casinos are usually on the receiving end of some of the above mentioned charity. Members of a casino’s staff will often gain some extra padding on their income from the generosity of lucky patrons.
Online poker sites’ like Hollywood Poker have hosted multiple charity poker tournaments. Their Tsunami Relief Poker Tournament and Hurricane Katrina Charity events were both widely successful and raised a lot of money for charities such as the Red Cross.
