Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi wins his first WSOP championship
After five days of play, on June 2nd, 2010 Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi finally beat Vladimir Schmelev in the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship to win his first World Series of Poker bracelet and $1,559,046 first prize. He survived a three-to-one chip deficit at heads-up, which lasted almost 100 hands.
Mizrachi won an epic heads-up with relentless aggression and determination. Schmelev started with a massive chip lead but became visibly frustrated as luck gradually swung to Mizrachi's favour. On Hand 235, Mizrachi went all-in with a Qs5c and his Russian opponent called with a dominating Qd8s. Schmelev kept strong with the 9h6h4c flop but the 5h on the turn moved to Mizrachi's side.
The Russian needed the river to be an eight or seven to keep going but it was a four of diamonds so he had to leave with the $963,375 runner-up prize. Mizrachi won his first WSOP victory, an addition to his two World Poker Tour titles.
According to Bluff Magazine, The Grinder was quick to give props to his brother Rob. To quote, "We learn from each other. I've been playing for so many years and we learn from each other every single day." Brothers Michael and Robert Mizrachi both ended on the Top 5 winners.
