McGraw Foundation Holds Poker Charity Tournament

June 19, 2006

When you combine poker, country music superstar Tim McGraw, some of the sporting world’s top legends – you get one great poker tournament. And in the case of the Tug McGraw Foundation's annual poker tournament, you also raise a lot of money for a great cause.

The Tug McGraw Foundation's annual gala poker tournament will bring Tim McGraw and some of the most famous athletes from both the present and the past to the Philadelphia poker tournament. All of the money raised from the star-studded tournament will go towards The Tug McGraw Foundation. The charity raises funds and awareness on brain tumor research in memory of legendary New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Tug McGraw, Tim McGraw’s father.

"This is shaping up to be a very special evening, one that will both entertain and inspire people," said Tim McGraw, the Grammy-winning country singer whose father, Tug McGraw, was a famed MLB relief pitcher, died from brain cancer in 2004. "In addition to trying their hand at poker, guests will enjoy a live stage show, live and silent auctions, and an awards ceremony honoring people who have helped to improve the quality of life for brain tumor patients and their families."

"I was a huge fan of Tug McGraw's and was inspired by his tremendous courage. I'm happy to raise funds for research that helps brain tumor patients live better," explained one of this year’s celebrity poker players, Chicago Bear Super Bowl winning quarterback, Jim McMahon.

The November 3rd poker tournament will have numerous all-star poker players sitting at the Texas Hold’em tables, including Chicago White Sox First Baseman, Jim Thome. Bob Costas, the legendary baseball analyst and commentator will be returning as the Tug McGraw Foundation's Master of Ceremonies.

The Tug McGraw Foundation’s Gala was attended by over 400 guests last year and many were prominent people in the sporting world. Awards are given to people the charity feel aids in the awareness of brain tumor research. Last year, awards were presented to George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, well-known Montreal Expo superstar Rusty Staub and Tim McGraw. The winner of the Tug McGraw Foundation’s poker tournament will get an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
