26 year old poker pro Jason DeWitt wins the $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'Em Event17 at the 2010 World Series of Poker. This marks his first WSOP gold bracelet victory. He went home with $818,959, which was expected, as heavy odds were stacked against DeWitt earlier in the tournament. Said to be the toughest final table so far at this year's WSOP, DeWitt beat a massive total of 792 tough players.
Sam Tricket from Great Britain came in second. Among the 72 top finishers who collected prize money are former WSOP gold bracelet finishers: Perry Friedman (10th), Antonio “the Magician” Esfandiari (12th), Josh Arieh (26th), Ted Lawson (39th), Chau Giang (41st), Lisa Hamilton (46th), Phil Hellmuth (50th), Vitaly Lunkin (65th), and Annette Obrestad (72nd).
The final hand came when DeWitt was ahead by a 2-to-1 margin. He had 10s8h as opposed to Trickett's As7d. The flop gave top pair to DeWitt while Trickett had an outside straight draw with an overcard. The flop brought 8d6s5c with a 6c turn and 5h river. Trickett missed his draw and DeWitt emerged victorious with two pair – 8s and 6s on the last pot.
DeWitt is originally from Indiana and now lives in the Atlantic area. He has performed well at the WSOP for the last five years. According to official records, he has one win, four final table appearances, and collected prize money seven times. His total WSOP earnings amount to $1,324,995. He revealed his way of dealing with stress in a poker tournament, “I would do [this] online,” he said. “When I was in a big pot, I would just think about what the other guy needs and if itcomes, oh well. I saw it coming. No big deal.”
