California introduces a new bill to legalize Online Poker
California: First US state to legalize Online Poker?
On May 28th, 2010, State Sen. Rod Wright introduced legislation, "The Internet Gambling Consumer Protection and Public-Private Partnership Act of 2010." This bill aims to undo the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in California and proposes that gambling firms bid for the right to operate the three legal forms of gambling: fantasy sports, online lotteries, and horse/harness racing while adding online poker.
According to LA Times' Patrick McGreevy, Wright estimates more than 1.5 million Californians that wager on overseas gambling websites which are not even subject to regulation by the United States government. The bill aims "to protect the millions of Californians who gamble online, allow state law enforcement to ensure consumer protection, and to keep the revenues generated from Internet poker in California."
The Great Recession has changed the political fight. The public won't stand for higher taxes and there is barely a government service left to cut. Wright's proposed bill requires legislative analysis and a second hearing by the Senate Governmental Organization Committee.
