In the midst of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event, the nomination for this year's Poker Hall of Fame champion has just opened. The set of criteria must strictly be adhered to this year as last year, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan's nomination and leading the race filled the nomination with heated debate and controversy. Directors dropped his name off the ballot under the “standing the test of time” qualifying clause as the young poker champion hadn't yet won high stakes games both online and in live games. Last year, Mike Sexton was the sole new member.
This year, the public is encouraged to submit their nominees with brief descriptions via the Internet until August 31st. Entries will be tabulated by the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council with the top 10 vote-getters announced on September 1st, 2010. On September 13th, all the 16 living Poker Hall of Famers, together with a poker media panel, will cast votes to determine who are worthy for class 2010.
In the past, 75% of the votes would be tallied but this year, only the top two vote-getters will be inducted on the Main Event final table.
A Hall of Famer must have:
- Played poker against acknowledged top competition
- Played for high stakes
- Played consistently well, gaining the respect of others
- Stood the test of time
A nominated non-player must have contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.
The Poker Hall of Fame is established in 1979 and titles are only reserved for true poker legends. The Poker Hall of Famers include Mike Sexton, Henry Orenstein, Dewey Tomko, Phil Hellmuth, Barbara Enright, Billy Baxter, T.J. Cloutier, Crandell Addington, Jack Binion, Berry Johnston, Bobby Baldwin, Johnny Chan, Lyle Berman, Stu Ungar and Roger Moore.
