The WSOP 2010 Old Champs, New Hero, and Crowd Favorites

August 31, 2010
Whose names resonated the most in the World Series of Poker 2010?

The intensity of the World Series of Poker 2010 increased player stress levels that made for a lot of drama. Everyone fought to be this year's WSOP story but who among the 7,319 hopefuls really made the loudest noise?

The legendary Poker Brat Phil Hellmuth, now seems to be old news. He almost won his 12th bracelet but it went unnoticed. Hellmuth was eliminated in 7th place from the $1,500 PLO-8 event and the poker world just moved on. “I'm a grinder,” he said during the Tournament of Champions. “Like Tony Cousineau.” However, the poker community thinks he inflates his own ego.

Meanwhile, this has been a record year for Allen “Chainsaw” Kessler. He took home $276,000, finishing second place in the $10,000 Stud-8 Championship. But aside from Kessler, other crowd favorites are Dean Hamrick, Chris Bell, Gavin Smith and Shawn “Jordankickz” Busse bringing home the bacon to huge packs of friends and fans. Mike Matusow played as well as he entertained, leading the Tournament of Champions both in chips and TV time.

Danny Wong's sick beat in the $25,000 six-max event also makes for a good story. He was one of the chip leaders on Day 1 but lasted only less than an hour after the dinner break. He went all-in with pocket eights for top set on an 8c7d3c9h board. His opponent had pocket threes for bottom set and drew to one out on the river. The 3d on the river gave the opponent quads and cruelly sent Wong reeling out. Ouch.

Men Nguyen, on the other hand, wins the Most Dramatic Bubble award. He ran into Ryan “G0lfa” D'Angelo for a few hand-for-hand rounds before raising and D'Angelo potting preflop. Nguyen bet more than half of his chips and when the flop fell QsJd9s, he went all-in. Even if it were dangerous, D'Angelo called with AsAh9h5h. Everyone was horrified to realize that Nguyen had only been bluffing. He left the table without a word.
