The Battle Begins for the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year
Many consider the WSOP Player of the Year title even more prestigious than the tournament championship award because the former rewards consistency and a player's ability to do well in all types of events. The battle begins this week, which signals the rest of the pack to do their best to manuever into contention. This week, the sharks will emerge.
The WSOP Player of the Year is decided upon, based on the points awarded to those who cash in a WSOP open tournament, with the number of points based on how high a player finishes and his/her type of event. At the end of the WSOP, the player with the most number of points is crowned Player of the Year.
The prize is different each year; for the first year, when Toyota sponsored the event, the winner was awarded a car. In the succeeding years, prizes range from a custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle to WSOP Main Event buy-ins.
The first WSOP Player of the Year winner was Daniel Negreanu, followed by Allen Cunningham, Jeff Madsen, Tom Scheider, Eric Lindgren and Jeffrey Lisandro. Among thousands of contenders this year, there's already a number of resounding names, including Phil Hellmuth, Braxton Dunaway, Timothy Boyter, Mattew Berkey, Terry Fleischer, Gavin Griffin, The Maven, Erica Schoenberg, Joe Cada, Adam Levi, Allan Bari, Antonio Esfandiari and Neil Channing.
As the race begins, Gary Wise of ESPN gives further updates:
"While big names are few and far between at the top of the standings, a handful did make it through 1B with stacks intact. Ariel "DaEvils" Schneller ($56,200), Tim Phan ($51,900), Jordan Morgan ($51,400), 2009 CardPlayer Player of the Year Eric Baldwin ($41,500), Lee Markholt ($22,800), Men "The Master" Nguyen ($21,300) and Isaac Baron ($20,500) all made it through the gauntlet."
