LoserKid1983: How does he do it?
After his astounding success in the October 21st Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational, LoserKid1983 had the Hollywood Poker staff admiring his poker suave like a school-girl gushes over Justin Timberlake – or whoever the kids like these days. Point being, we’re still astounded, so we asked our poker prodigy to take some time out from cleaning out the pots to share a bit about himself – and his success – with all of us. Lucky for us, he was good enough to agree!
Q: What sparked your interest in poker?
A: Well, I started out playing Blackjack at the local casino - which wasn’t much bigger than the 2 BJ tables they had in there. I would compete in tourneys and play at the tables. I had a knack for the game. I walked out ahead a good percentage of the time, and for a college kid nothing is better than money for booze. As the poker boom took off we started playing at school and I started playing at the casinos. I think my years of playing Blackjack gave me a good read for the cards, and over time with numerous hours of practice, my read on players took off! I was placing in the money at our home games consistently and making some decent runs at the casino’s poker rooms. All this happened over a two year period. It has taken some time to really get a grip on the game, and switching between online and live poker is something that doesn’t come easy. More recently poker has become a major hobby; it’s a great stress reliever, when the cards are falling right, from the hectic lectures and studies.
Q: What do you like best about playing at Hollywood Poker?
A: I had an opportunity to study abroad in the Copenhagen, Denmark. While my friends and I were there, we made friends with some rad German guys who loved poker more than anything in the world. Needless to say, we made friends quickly and got right into the swing of playing some small home games. With all the spare time, it gave me a chance to check out some online poker sites. My first site just didn’t have the homey feeling that I was looking for. After messing around at other sites, I found the format I like the best. Then I found there were other sites that ran on the same server! Which lead me to Hollywood Poker! There is nothing that I don’t like at Hollywood Poker. The deposit bonuses are great, the other players and stars are by far the friendliest people I have ever met online, Hollywood Poker has the greatest live support team I had ever seen, and the Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational has to be one of the finest tourneys in all the land! Who wouldn’t like a shot at knocking out Ronny, Mike, James, Vince, Mimi, or any of the other awesome stars and baggin’ a sweet bounty!
Q: If someone were to want to find you at Hollywood Poker, where and when do you usually play?
A: My Hollywood Poker playing is restricted by my studies. In the afternoon I will more than likely be on, if not playing just hanging out with the locals. The best time is on Thursdays around 10pm EST, getting ready for the always entertaining Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational!
Q: Do you have advice for new players? If so, what?
A: Advice for new players: Hmmm. There’s a lot of good advice out there, read it all, but take everything into consideration. The advice that has helped me the most and I find highly important is: BE PATIENT, it takes time to not only learn the game, but to study players, and also to make money. Making $1 in an hour is better than putting my bankroll on the line and losing it all - which has happened!
Q: When you’re not cleaning out the pots at Hollywood Poker, how do you occupy your time?
A: My time is mostly split between 3 things. First and foremost is school. I am what would be called a “Super Senior” (5th year) Electrical Engineer at Michigan Tech. It’s definitely a time consuming restraint on my Hollywood Poker playing. Second, would be my wonderful and beautiful girlfriend! She had a sketchy time with me playing online poker, but since she’s graduated and working full time 3.5 hours away from here, she’s letting the leash out a little. Also cashing in on one of the Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational tourneys helped too! It's a good feeling having someone backing me up and watching out for me at the same time. Third would be my couch. Ask either of my roommates, both would say, from their couches, that there are many delightful hours spent there. If only we had wireless internet! Now, my couch only takes third, until the snow rolls in. In the winter I am a Ski Patroller at our local Mont Ripley Ski Hill. The hill is small but it packs a big punch when we get some fresh snow up there. Being able to get fresh tracks before the hill opens is one of the best feelings in the world, but only second best to raking in the pots while playing at Hollywood Poker.
True enough! Nothing beats the sweet, sweet elation of being weighed down with too much coin. On behalf of everyone at Hollywood Poker, I'd like to thank LoserKid1983 for sharing and wish him best of luck - not that he seems to need it.

Player Spotlight: Jon_Aronacan
Greetings everyone! I just want to say ‘hi’ and tell you all little about myself.
First off, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to the support staff and the guys, who have giving me quite the warm welcome and always cheer me up when I am having a bad day or getting cold cards,
Anyway, I'm from a small town in Wisconsin and I grew up and spent 21 years there. I partied and played a lot of poker - mainly because there was nothing else to do when there was 2 feet of snow falling!
I learned to play poker from the TV, which got my attention. Then I read a few books and I took most of my friends money learning from the "pros". Then I moved to sunny south Florida, where I have resided for the past 3 years now. What a difference! I got involved in a billiard installation company (one of the largest in south Florida). We deliver for 9 retail stores and on top of that, we have our own business.
One person in particular got me involved in live tournaments. I played in a few and it made me open my eyes to the broader look. All in all, I enjoy playing poker. It’s like a new relationship. Yeah, I get sick of it at times, but I’m always back for more!
Anyway, that’s about it! Make sure you say ‘hi’ to me in the lobby and at the tables. I’m really easy to get along with - unless you take my chippies!

Take Your Checks To The Bank
The “Grand Old Master” of poker, Johnny Moss, won the world championship three times. He played against the best players in the world and for the highest stakes.
In the last few years of his life, he lived in a complimentary suite at Binion’s Horseshoe and played poker almost every day in the casino. As Johnny approached and passed 80 years of age, he often played 20-40 hold’em. Although his game may have slipped a little, the Master was still a formidable opponent. He taught many expensive lessons to young upstarts who liked to challenge him.
Although I usually played 10-20 hold’em, I could not resist joining the 20-40 when a seat opened up on Johnny’s immediate left. The lessons to be learned figured to be worth playing a little above my comfort zone. Besides, I might get lucky and beat the Master.
Early in the session the cards were running over me. I was winning handsomely and my confidence soared. In late position I was raising frequently pre-flop. On the flop the players often checked to the raiser. I usually bet while saying, “no checking, take your checks to the bank” During this hour or so, Johnny played few hands and none when I was in the pot. But I did notice him watching me closely several times when I was playing. Maybe the Master was not too old to learn a few new tricks.
A hand then developed where everyone folded to Johnny on the small blind. I had the AJ of clubs and was ready to raise on the big blind. After studying me a few seconds, Johnny limped in. I raised. Johnny thought a moment and re-raised. This surprised me as I called. Happily the flop came JJQ with two spades. Johnny thought and said, “check”. Fighting back the urge to tell the Master to “take his check to the bank”, I bet my three jacks. Johnny check-raised. I thought about re-raising but decided to see what the turn brought. At this point I knew I was facing a pair of aces or kings, a flush draw, or possibly three jacks. When the turn brought the 3 of spades, Johnny checked. If he was afraid of the flush, I had him. I bet again. He check-raised again. So he had the flush. I called and hoped the board would pair. The beautiful 3 of hearts came on the end. Johnny took his time and checked. I had gotten lucky and drawn out on the master. Excited, I could resist no longer, I bet while saying “take your checks to the bank”. For the fourth and last time, Johnny check-raised. After almost re-raising, I decided we had the same hand and just called. The “Master” turned over a pair of queens for a winning full house.
As he raked in the pot, Johnny said nothing but he had taught me a valuable and costly lesson. A “check” against an aggressive player does not always mean, “I have nothing”. It only means, “I am not betting right now”. Also, I am sure Johnny had studied my betting habits and patterns, and was confident that I would bet each time.
After winning several more nice pots, the “Grand Old Master” left with four racks full of chips. Where was he headed? Maybe he was going to “take my checks to the bank”.

Vince Van Patten's Corner: Start practicing for WPT Bellagio!
Once again, Hollywood Poker is coming back to Bellagio for their WPT Bellagio tournament. I just got back from Bellagio myself, and not only it is one of the best hotel and casinos in the world, it’s also, without a doubt, an incredibly popular place to play poker. Some of the best games in the business are played there. Tournaments at Bellagio usually bring out L.A celebrities, like Toby McGuire, Mimi Rogers and maybe even Ben Affleck. The locale definitely draws these big names.
You can expect some tough competition since tournaments at Bellagio always draw the pros. You can also expect a huge prize pool if you get lucky – a prize pool that would provide a nice way to pay for Christmas gifts if you win!
The WPT Bellagio 5 Diamond Poker tournament will be a lot of fun and I hope to see tons of people from Hollywood Poker there!
