I actually left law school yesterday midway through my 2nd year to take a promotion at the company I work for. This will mean more free hours available to play against you at Hollywood Poker tables - and quite a bit of a pay raise; and the ability to purchase our first home; and insurance benefits. You know, the little perks that aren’t quite as great as freeing up time to play poker, but nice nonetheless. Anyway, who am I? A husband, a father of three, a 31-year old guy who likes some solid competition and a guy that will talk smack like there’s no tomorrow whether he can back it up or not. If you’ve sat with me, you know what I’m talking about. Born in raised in St. Louis (Go Cards!) my wife and children moved to California in 2000 where I spent two years working in the entertainment industry before returning to St. Louis in 2002. During my time in La-La Land I managed to meet some celebs, go to some great parties, AND (make sure you’re sitting down) I wrote the season premiere of the 3rd season of Pokemon. Pretty exciting stuff. I’ve got a Bachelor’s in Film/Video Production and my passion for movies is unparalleled in the free world. On that note, give it up for James Woods in Diggstown. Great flick. If I wasn’t an out of shape piece o’ crap, that might have inspired me to get in the ring. That brings me to what attracts me to this site: The Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational. I had dabbled with this site here and there several times, but when I sat down for the aforementioned celebrity tourney and was seated with Michael on my left and James Woods on HIS left, I knew this site was something special. Unfortunately James couldn’t stick around long as he had an interview with Vanity Fair, but Michael was quite the host and we had a great time trading chips back and forth for an hour or so until he got bumped to another table (and promptly lost his stack). How fun is it to sit down at the table and realize, big movie career or not, we’re all equal in the game of poker and we’re all just people. The celebs at this site are so down to earth and it is a great time to play some hands with them in these tournaments. So party on folks. Hopefully I’ll see you at the tables and you can take my chips and make fun of me for writing for Pokemon or whatever. Hollywood Poker, keep up the great work. This site rules. ~pay4lawschoo
I don't host poker games because I don't like my recipe - and I only know of one. My very first poker experiences were in home games. My parents had home games, but I was always put to bed before they started. So, from what I learned from things I heard, I came up with my own recipe. MINNESOTARON'S POKER HOME GAME RECIPE: 1 Friday night circa 1982 First meet 8 boys/classmates down at the bowling alley. When you’re sure parents are out for the night, light a cigarette and get everyone kicked out of the lanes for under-aged smoking. When outside, tell everyone that you have wine, smokes, and nudie cards at home. When everyone has gone home to get their allowances, run home and make sure parents are gone, and your sister’s idiot 18 year old boyfriend, Rick, has come over. Using Rick as leverage, tell sister who is supposed to be babysitting you that you’re going to have friends over for a poker party. Pay Rick for smokes, and wait for 3 of the 8 friends who don't have curfew or didn't get grounded, to show up. Proceed to basement as per threats from sister and commence with drinking, smoking, and poker home game. As the deck of cards are yours and old, you should study the backs of them so as to know your opponents hands. Also, be prepared to always play Baseball, or Five Card Draw with up to 4 dealer choice wilds. Play will continue until someone gets mad, loses their money, gets caught cheating, throws up, or comments about how hot your sister is. Play will only pause for bathroom breaks, Friday Night Videos, and The Benny Hill Show. Parental arrival will be marked by sound of heavy and rapid footsteps on the ceiling. This is Rick running out the back door so as to avoid detection by your father. Calmly move your forewarned guests to the basement window and have them crawl out. Spray basement with Lysol and Chew a stick of Big Red. There will be plenty of time as parents will be grilling your sister about the evening’s activities. Casually walkup stairs, inform parents that you were watching a Dukes of Hazard Marathon, back any other of your sister’s lies, and proceed to bed and dreaming about the invention of the internet. So that’s my recipe. I was hoping to get Hollywood Poker’s recipe on hosting games, but like with most successful recipes, I doubt they will share. ~MinnesotaRon Congratulations to MinnesotaRon, who won a tournament ticket for this winning entry on last week's Write to Win topic, 'Hosting a Home Game'! This week’s topic: Dead Poker Pros . I had a great time in my tournament this past Tuesday, the Vince Van Patten Poker Challenge – and I really want to send out a message to MrCleve, who was the player I went head to head with at the end of the tournament. I was truly impressed by his play. The blind structure was small and he played well; lots of skill, lots of patience. He obviously watched the WPT! Still, as luck would have it, I beat him in the end despite his skilled play. I always look forward to playing with the gang at Hollywood Poker and look forward to the next game. I’ll be at the Bellagio for the next couple days, but hopefully I’ll be seeing you around the site! Vince will be hosting another Vince Van Patten Challenge in the near future, so keep your eyes locked to the Extra to keep up on the action. The $1,000 from this past tournament will roll over into a progressive jackpot in the next. The Vince Van Patten Poker Challenge just keeps getting bigger and better!
