Josh Malina’s Celebrity Spotlight
1) How and when did you start playing poker?
I started playing poker seriously in college. When I graduated - in 1988 - I moved to New York City and got into Aaron Sorkin’s home-game. We would play a couple times a week. It wasn’t long before we were playing pot Limit Hold‘em for decent stakes. You could win or lose more than a grand a night, which was major money for us in those days. 2) Do you play in a home? Who do you play with? What's the funniest thing that has ever happened?
I have been playing in Hank Azaria’s home game for about 13 years. It’s a great group of guys. We’re all close friends. It’s turned into a serious No-Limit game recently.
The funny thing about Hank’s game is that when I first joined, they had all been playing together for a few years. I was the new guy. It was low stakes - the kind of game where they’d play a few hands and then everyone would get up and eat a sandwich. Then they’d play a few more hands and everyone would get up for a drink. I was always sitting at the table shouting, “Whose deal is it? Come on! In the name of all that is holy, let’s play POKER!” Hank called me one day and told me he felt bad, but that some of the guys objected to my intensity. They didn’t really enjoy playing with me. And so I became the only person ever to be suspended from the Hank Azaria League. I’m happy to say that they eventually let me back in and now everyone plays like I did twelve years ago.
3) You and Andrew have been buddies for years so I have read. Was the idea for the show Celebrity Poker Showdown an idea of you both or was it someone else's concept and more a producing match-up for you and Andrew?
Andy and I have known each other for more than two decades and we have played for many years together in Hank’s home game. We were playing a tournament at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles and during a 10 minute break we came up with the idea for Celebrity Poker Showdown. We decided we’d be partners and together we sold Bravo on the idea. We’ve now shot 42 episodes. We are very psyched to be part of the incredible poker explosion happening today. 4) How has the mix of skill and luck shifted for you in the years you have been playing poker? Do you see a shift in that mix between online and B&M Poker?
Well, to me poker isn’t gambling. Gambling is when you wager money against the house, despite knowing that the odds are against you. Over time, you’re always going to lose money gambling. Poker, however, while it clearly includes an element of cruel luck, favors the better play over the lesser player. Over time, the good players are consistently going to take money from the bad players. So, while I have always made money playing poker, I definitely continue to work on my game. It literally pays to work on one’s poker game - and I do.
Online poker is an interesting contrast to live games. You definitely have to play a tighter, more odds-driven game. You can’t get a read off anyone. That being said, it pays to watch people’s betting patterns, because many players bet predictably in certain situations. So, in that sense, people do have online ‘tells’. 5) Who is your favorite actor/actress?
I love great, edgy comic actors. People like Gene Wilder and Robert Downey Jr. I think Daniel Day Lewis is unreal; I think he’s about as good as it gets. 6) What has been your favorite role as an actor?
I have a special place in my heart for Jeremy Goodwin of “Sports Night.” It was my first television series; the cast was amazing and the writing was great. Something about the whole time we shot it was magical. Also, it was just a lot of fun to play the part. Jeremy was whip-smart and neurotic and vulnerable and funny. I liked being him. 7) Is Tim Busfield your real brother-in-law?
Yep, Tim’s my bro. I did a play with him on Broadway in 1989 (A Few Good Men). I got to be good friends with Tim and his wife, Jenny. One day she told me that if I were ever to meet her sister, I would marry her. Sure enough, I met Melissa a couple years later, and married her in 1996.
8) Why do you like playing at Hollywood Poker?
I am a big online player and Hollywood Poker is the first site I’ve found that really differentiates itself from the rest. There is a real sense of community. I sign-in and immediately people say “hi” and start to chat me up. I’ve got folks on the site that I play with regularly and that I’m always happy to talk to in the Lobby. Also, a lot of my actor friends now play on the site, so it’s fun to run into them there and to sit down and try to take each other’s money.
9) What’s your top poker advice or best tip?
My number one tip would be to remember that it’s easier to bluff a good player than a bad player. It’s counter-intuitive, but it’s true.
10) What tables can I find you playing at most at Hollywood Poker?
I often play with limited time, so I favor the shorthanded Sit ‘n’ Go’s. I love the new 50 dollar shorthanded at table Malibu and 100 at La Brea, but I also play Limit and No-Limit. If you see me in the lobby, give me a shout. I’m happy to sit down and play just about anything you want!

Player Spotlight: Honey_comb1!
Howdy Y'all!
Here on Hollywood Poker, I am Honey_comb1. You can call me Honey! I am a mother of two who is very excited to hit the big 4-0 soon. If I‘ve had this much fun in these first 40 years, I can't wait for the next 40!
I come from a long line of entertainers and gamblers. I love to sing and play guitar. I have been very fortunate in my music and I am presently working on a CD, which will be completed at the end of October, 2005. You will be able to sample the CD on my website within the next month.
Another new adventure for me is starting October 23, 2005. I will be Hostess and Director of Player Relations for International Poker Tours in their CanAm Poker Challenge Series Events, being held at Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, New York.
I first tried the game of Hold’em in Vegas. Although I lost horribly to a very slick and obviously knowledgeable player, I was able to pick up a few valuable pointers. After he scooped up my chips and my ego off the table, he kindly offered to discuss my error in play over a hot cup of coffee. I said, "Make it a shot of bourbon and I'll listen!"
He told me two things that could be deadly for me, depending if I wanted to perfect them of course. One: I have a face that TELLS: I am working on that! I wonder if Oil of Olay makes a ‘No Tell’ night cream. Two: My betting style. Playing online has helped me to experience different styles of betting and allowed me to see just how others respond to my bets.
I have played many online poker sites but in my eyes, none compare to Hollywood Poker. Sure, like any other site, it has it’s glitches and twitches, yet Hollywood Poker Support and Management, along with the game structure and Star feature put it on a stage of it’s own - a stage this Honey has chosen to make her poker playground.
Hollywood Poker has shown me their desire to update and problem solve for us players and also enhance games and grow with their player base. That's what I want in a poker site! BRAVO HOLLYWOOD POKER!
The new friends I have met and old friends I have come to meet up with again have truly made each visit to Hollywood Poker a pleasant one. Players here have taught me so much! I cherish each of you for your friendships and your chippies!
It's a new game everyday! There are new laughs everyday! There is a new face to smile at everyday! This of course means new chips to go after everyday and you have GOT TO LOVE THAT!
You will find Honey hanging out in the tournament games, in the Greenroom Forum or just come and say "Howdy" in the lobby and I will give you a big "Honey Howdy" back!
Till my chippies fly your way! Keep Playing! God Bless and Good Luck!
~HONEY~

Write to Win: Your Favorite Poker Pal
My favorite poker pal has dark eyes, long black hair and always is happy to see me. She keeps me warm on those nights when the deck runs cold and the draw-outs are fierce. When I let out a whoop, when winning a tournament, I usually wake her up and send her into a confused tizzy. What's great is that she really doesn't mind and she'll go right back to sleep. On days where I'm sick and curled up on the couch playing poker, she'll walk in and check on me every once in a while. Maybe she'll even give me a nuzzle. If I find myself playing the Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational Tournament late into the night, she is usually up with me in my office, patiently waiting for me to finish up and head up to bed. Best of all, I love to tuck my feet under her hairy belly to keep my toes warm.
They say a dog is a man's best friend and I have that in Katya.
