New Series Features Woods and Poker Pro Phil 'The Unabomber' Laak Premiering on GSN Friday, October 7 at 10PM ET/PT With Back-To-Back Hour Episodes
Other Players Include Jennifer Tilly, Ted Forrest, Danny Masterson and Cyndy Violette
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- It's an old-fashioned "choose up sides" poker showdown between Hollywood superstar James Woods' team and poker pro Phil Laak's team in THE JAMES WOODS GANG VS. THE UNABOMBERS IN POKER ROYALE. Premiering on Friday, October 7 at 10:00PM ET/PT, poker enthusiasts will now be able to enjoy two hours of the best poker players in action every Friday night on GSN. In THE JAMES WOODS GANG VS. THE UNABOMBERS IN POKER ROYALE, veteran actor James Woods ("Pretty Persuasion," "Rudy," "Casino") and Phil "The Unabomber" Laak (placed 1st in the 2004 World Poker Tour Main Event and host of E!'s Hollywood Hold 'Em) choose their own teams to battle it out over seven episodes. Filmed at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California, the series features a prize-pot topping $75,000 and bragging rights as to who captained the best team. On Woods' team are Kathy Liebert (ranked in the top 20 players of all time, winner of POKER ROYALE: BATTLE OF THE SEXES), Bob Goen (Entertainment Tonight), Ted Forrest (five World Series of Poker bracelets), Susie Isaacs (two World Series of Poker bracelets) and Nicole Sullivan (Mad TV, The King of Queens). Playing for the Unabombers are Jennifer Tilly (2005 WSOP Women's Final Table bracelet winner), Cyndy Violette (1st Place 2004 World Series of Poker Seven Card Stud), Danny Masterson (That 70's Show), Hassan Habib (2nd Place 2004 World Poker Tour Championship) and Gail O'Grady (NYPD Blue, American Dreams). In recent years Woods has taken the world of poker by storm, and is a force to be reckoned with not only on the big screen. He plays regularly in Hollywood home games and has respect among his poker peers. Laak is known on the poker circuit as "The Unabomber" for playing in hooded sweatshirts and sunglasses. He is one of the most animated players at the table, jumping around and kneeling beside the dealer while waiting for the river. He coined the term "I felted him" -- leaving the last person at the table with just the felt in front of them and recently finished second in the 2005 World Series of Poker Pot Limit Hold'Em event. Returning as host is John Ahlers with sideline reporter Lisa Dergan. Providing expert analysis is professional poker player Robert Williamson III. The team captains decide which players participate in each match at the coveted final table. All players play a minimum of three games, earning points based on where they finish, hoping to bluff, call and check their fearless challengers. First place in each match earns ten points, second place receives eight points, third place is six points, fourth place is four points, fifth place receives two points. The team with the highest points from the qualifying matches has a chip count advantage going into the finale.
THE JAMES WOODS GANG VS. THE UNABOMBERS IN POKER ROYALE is part of GSN's poker franchise POKER ROYALE. The series airs every Friday at 10:00PM as part of GSN's Casino Night and has included COMEDIANS VS. PROS, YOUNG BLOODS SPECIAL (LIVE), CELEBRITIES VS. PROS, BATTLE OF THE SEXES and THE WPPA CHAMPIONSHIP.
POKER ROYALE is produced by Jeff Mirkin Productions in association with ArmFitz Productions. Maureen FitzPatrick, Jeff Mirkin and John Faratzis serve as executive producers.

Hand_Pat here! I am an over-educated, old broad from California, who was mostly a 7-Card Stud player. I have been playing Texas Hold’em (on-line) about eight months now. I've lived different places, from Alaska to Florida; and done a lot of different jobs; been active in marketing, politics, and many other areas. I have been a lawyer for the last number of years (but I am really trying to give it up; but it is difficult to reform). Hope to build a cabin some time soon and with the exception of “computering”, I hope live an old fashioned life on a few acres. I came to Hollywood Poker to meet/chat with James Woods and find out if being on top in IQ translates into being a top poker player. I hope so. My second day playing the freerolls here I won a $30.00 freeroll, which gave me a starting bank account of $14.00. I have been one babe hooked on Hollywood Poker ever since. Like everyone else, I would like to win a ticket to the “Big One” – the WSOP. If I did, I would prefer to use the entries towards several of the lesser tourneys to multiply my chances of bringing home a bracelet. Although, I confess; I never heard of all of the Celebrities here, I am still a BIG FAN of Hollywood Poker!

This week's topic: The Popularization of Poker: Why do you think poker has become so big in the last few years?
Congratulations to last week's winner, one eyed cat! Read the winning submission below.
Dear John, This is going to be brief and to the point. I have left you, and I’m not coming back. I tried to be a good wife these past 27 years, but you never cared how I felt or noticed that I was nearing my limit with your gruff and bluff behavior. I tried to tell you how low I was, and that I was tired of setting the table, washing pots and pans and sitting home while you played at one golf tournament after another when you weren’t working. I was even happy for you when you scored an ace on the par 3 and won a $20.00 bet. (But I did tire of hearing about all the bad putts and wayward chips that didn’t find their target) And it wasn’t easy trying to raise three kids when I was at loose ends and mired in the muck of loneliness. I honestly thought I was going nuts at times, and even considered jumping off the nearest bridge, but realized that wasn’t the answer. What I needed was a life of my own. So, in desperation, John, I took one of the very few outs I had. I began an affair. (To be more accurate, I should say I resumed an affair I indulged in while I was in college before I met you.) And, I’m pleased to say, it has restored passion to my soul and consumed every waking moment of my new life. If you’re wondering where I am and what I’m doing, John, tune in the Travel Channel this Wednesday night at nine o’clock. I’ll be there, at the final table, playing on the WPT. Then I’ll be off to the Trump casinos in Atlantic City before hitting Vegas for the WSOP. One last thought: Don’t be surprised if you hear the TV announcers refer to me as ‘The Grey Trey’. (After all, a new life deserves a new name.) Take care and goodbye, Joan

Vince Van Patten's Corner
When I first started playing poker, we didn’t even have tournaments. We were playing 5-Card Draw back then and so everyone dealt themselves. Dealing the cards yourself makes the experience different. Back then, poker was a sub-culture itself. No one really knew what you were doing or what you were talking about. Poker? What are you talking about? It was like the Wild West, but it was a great time to start!
