After all, standing out from thousands of other qualified candidates is no easy feat – and since HollywoodPoker.com is an outstanding online poker site, we’d know!

Meet the HP Girls now!

Hollywood Hills

It’s summer time and the living's easy. The birds are chirping, the brooks babbling, school children are running rampant, and at Hollywood Poker headquarters, love is in the air. At least HP’s Editor, Hollay, thinks it should be – and what Hollay wants, Hollay gets. Or so she thinks...

HP Mike, a confirmed bachelor and typical heartbreaker was the target of Hollay’s misdirected attention. One day, she took it upon herself to sign-up Mike for an online dating service. After all, her second-cousin had found the love of his life through internet dating – and that happened against all probabilities. There are not many women who would share his love for performing interpretive dance while watching Jack Nicholson movies. Hollay was positive her theory was safe. The only wildcard was Mike – but Hollay had her ways of dealing with him.

“I can’t believe you’d put me on a dating site without telling me!” Mike was breathing heavily through his nose and his face was turning a striking shade of red. Hollay was reminded of the look on her father’s face when she came back from her first concert with a shaved head, a piercing and a guy named ‘Donk’.

Needless to say, Mike was a wee-bit more irate than Hollay had imagined.

“Tons of people do it,” Hollay reassured. “You’ll be fine. Besides, you never know who you might meet”.
Three days later, after he’d calmed down and stopped replacing the low-fat milk Hollay used for her coffee with full-fat cream, Mike grew bored – and then uncharacteristically curious about these online dating shenanigans. It couldn’t hurt to check it out, he reasoned. He had, after all, received several e-mails from ladies that couldn’t resist the Mikester. Only natural, of course. Besides, he hadn’t seen what exactly that meddlesome Hollay had posted in his profile.

Studly Poker Enthusiast seeks caring, sensitive young lady

Hey there ladies.  My name is Mike and I am everything you are looking for.  I am tall, dark and handsome and the perfect yin to your yang.  Fabio has nothing on me.  I am a true romantic and I still cry at weddings.  I like holding hands and watching sunsets and cuddling with kittens and puppies.  I am tired of my philandering ways and I am looking to settle down with a nice young lady.

Favorite song: “Hello” by Lionel Richie
Favorite movie: Beaches
Ideal woman: sweet, sensitive, romantic, great sense of humor, love of poker
Perfect date: dinner by candlelight surrounded by soft music, followed by a leisurely walk on the beach at sunset

“The horror...” Mike whispered as he read further on in his profile.  Hollay had melded together the stereotypical leading man from every trashy romance novel and chick flick ever created.  The other shocking thing was that Mike had received 13,892 replies in a matter of days - and the number continued to grow before Mike’s eyes.  Hollay had seemed to strike a chord with every single woman on this dating site.

After the rage subsided, Mike realized that all of these women wanted to meet him.  The sheer number of eligible women that wanted to meet him fanned his ego and instantly changed his mind about the whole online dating scene.  He pored through profile after profile and each woman seemed better, and hotter, than the last.  How could he possibly choose between all of these lovely ladies?

Then, fate stepped in.  One particular username jumped out at him and he knew that he must meet the woman who called herself...hotpokergirl.

Oh, the suspense is almost unbearable! What will happen next week? Only you can decide the fate of Mike’s love life! Does Mike:

- Contact hotpokergirl right away and set up a date?
- First consult HP Jeff – esteemed HP Developer and relationship guru- for advice.
- Decide to forgo online dating altogether and instead focus on making Hollay’s life miserable for the subsequent week?

In this week’s Player Spotlight: RagingBull88!

Hello, my name is Eric - although regulars to the Hollywood Poker Tournament lobby probably recognize me as RagingBull88 - a recent newcomer on the scene coming to you from Erlanger, Kentucky (south of Cincinnati, Ohio).

I have been playing Texas Hold’em for about a year now although it was not until about 6 months ago that I played for money for the first time. A group of card playing friends and relatives have a winter get together and I played in a multi-table tourney. While I did not finish well in the multi-table tourney, I bounced back and managed to score my first single table tournament victory the same night.

My profession, (transportation engineer), is one that does not immediately lend itself to helping me play poker but the skill required to design roadways does translate to my poker game. When designing a roadway, I have to analyze data carefully and make correct decisions in order to be both cost and safety effective. Poker is all about correct decisions and I try to take it seriously when I am at the table. It is not always easy when you are playing with such a lively bunch as the Hollywood Poker gang, but it is always more fun. It also helps that I chose my name after a favorite roller coaster of mine because like my namesake, poker is filled with ups and downs, and highs and lows.

I enjoy playing in the tourneys here because they are filled with the right mix of quality skilled players and fresh faced new players eager to learn. You can learn a lot about your game when you get a chance to play against both skill sets. My greatest accomplishment to date is finishing 2nd in the 8/7 $250 Freeroll. Outlasting 617 other players and having a true shot at winning was an experience that not many get to have. I feel that I hit on the right combination of skill and luck that day. Luck is the great equalizer and can bail you out of bad decisions and put you on the rail despite seemingly good decisions. I try to put myself in a position to have luck either help me a lot or damage me as little as possible. That is where the skill comes in to play.

Anyway, I hope to see and say hi to everyone in the tournament lobby and at the tables. Who knows, a heads up battle could be in our futures.

Write to Win

Here’s a bright spot in your day: When you write about poker, you could win a ticket to a HollywoodPoker.com tournament!

Just write about this week’s topic, send your entry to julie@hollywoodpoker.com and your submission will be posted in the forums with the other entries for your fellow players to vote on. The submission with the most votes wins a tournament ticket and a random voter snags HP gear! Pretty sweet, huh?

Congratulations to last week’s winner, LuckyLucy9, who’s won a tournament ticket!

Read LuckyLucy9’s winning entry:

I’m usually a pretty calm person, but last year I totally lost it while playing poker with an earache. Anyone who’s ever had an earache can vouch that doing ANYTHING with an earache is torment.
My son, who is in first year university, invited me to join his weekly poker with his friends. I was surprised, but didn’t want to miss out on this chance to spend some quality time with my son and – I’ll admit it – kicking his butt. I have never been a fantastic player, but I definitely have some solid experience behind me.
Fast track to the night of the game: I’ve somehow contracted an ear infection and spent 3 hours driving to my son’s place. When I arrive, I make a B-line to the kitchen and pour myself a drink; bad idea, in retrospect. As most reasonable people know, antibiotics + alcohol = incoherence. Oi.
During the entire game, my chip stack and mood fluctuated between extreme highs and lows. At one point, in a misguided attempt to gain a mental advantage, I actually told my unfortunate son exactly how and where he was conceived.
The next morning, I left with an extra $200, a deficit in dignity and a standing ban from any of my son’s future poker games.

Vince Van Patten’s Corner: HP Brings the Home Game Advantage!

You know I’ve been playing in celebrity home games for over 30 years. I was a kid when my dad first let me join in his weekly home game. Tons of old school actors and poker players passed through our doors. From Don Adams (Get Smart), Jerry Van Dyke (Coach), to Walter Matthau - you name it. But back then it was only the die hard players. It was more or less an underground game. Now with the explosion of poker, everyone’s playing in Hollywood home games. Now guys like Ben Affleck and Jimmy Woods and other Hollywood Poker power players are playing in weekly home games. It is truly exciting.
For more kicks, playing online is the answer. You play when you want and you quit when you want. So, let’s keep the tradition of the Hollywood home game intact - only this time, the games are wide open, no longer underground, and available for everyone to play.
