Hollywood Hills

Anyone who’s ever played poker knows that the poker table does not exactly generate the same sort of propriety as a garden party. There’s bound to be some less than congenial banter and for the most part it can add a fun dimension to the game. But sometimes, there’s one person that takes it too far.

When these people cross the line, most amicable players are thankful that they can simply leave the table or log-out– but what about when it’s not that simple? What about when one cannot escape the onslaught of smack-talk with a mere flick or click? What about when the barrage of slighting insinuations about your bad calls or your bad hair aren’t that easily ignored? What about when the jokes about your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your best-friend and yo’ momma are actually coming from...YO’ MOMMA?

Yes, friends – nothing is implausible, especially in Hollywood Hills. One unfortunate player learned this the hard way...

Charm319 was regular player at HollywoodPoker.com, and she prided herself in being able to dish out a healthy dose of smack-talk at the tables. Still, she kept her smack in check – she was there to play, not talk trash.

One day, while playing ‘Lucky Dollar’ – her favorite economically friendly HP tournament - Charm319 was seated at a table that would change her life forever.

It started when she tried to exchange a few niceties with her fellow players.

Charm 319: hi everyone! gl!

x_SuperMario: you too!

DantesDeck: back at ya.

Charm319 smiled to herself; it seemed like a friendly bunch. This was going to be a good game. Then suddenly another comment popped up in the chat window.

DottieDanger: you sucka’s gonna need all the luck you can get!

Charm319 felt a hard lump of dread rise in her throat. She hadn’t felt that way since her prom date, Greg, showed up in the same dress as her. DottieDanger – the most notorious smack-talker at HP - could intimidate anyone who crossed her path with just one quick witted insult. Rumors had it that she could make even the toughest players crumble like a week old macadamia nut cookie under her barrage of rhetorical bullets.

Straight away, she decided that her best bet was to just stay quiet. No need to provoke. Unfortunately, her table-mate, DantesDeck, was ignorant of DottieDanger’s reputation and tried to start up a pleasant conversation after a few hands.

DantesDeck:  hey dottie, come here often?

DottieDanger: sure, but usually i manage to avoid playing with amateurs like you.

DantesDeck: wow, what’s the hostility about?

DottieDanger: this isn’t a dating site, buddy. concentrate on playing and you might win a hand for once.

x_SuperMario: hahahahahaha! this is awesome!

DottieDanger: can it plumber-man. say, didn’t i play you the other night?

x_SuperMario: don’t remember.

DottieDanger: betting with pocket 4’s when the other guy obviously had a flush? yeah, that was you. nice work btw. go back to the fish pond small-fry.

DantesDeck:  hey now...

DottieDanger: not that I’m complaining, the betting strategy has rewards – esp. for those of us who like your money.

Charm319 couldn’t take it anymore. She was outraged by DottieDanger’s blistering tongue and her considerable chip-lead had sky-rocketed her confidence. She had to step in.

Charm319: yeah, well...your mother!

DottieDanger: excuse me?

Charm319 summoned all her knowledge gained at the hype of the ‘yo momma’ era. She searched her brain for long forgotten episodes of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. No doubt, she was a force to be reckoned with.

Charm319: you heard me. your mother’s so fat, she has her own area code! your mother’s so fat that when she goes to the beach, the tide comes in!

DottieDanger: charm susan 319! how dare you speak to your mother in that way!

Charm319: M-m-mom....?

DottieDanger: 13 hours of labor for what? a foul mouthed, disrespectful daughter! for shame, charm319, for shame.

Charm319: mom, i’m sorry. i didn’t know. i...i ...

DottieDanger: i think it’s time for you to leave. these boys and i were just having a nice conversation and you took it too far.

Charm319: but, i...

DantesDeck: i think she’s right, charm319. maybe you should go.

x_SuperMario: you really shouldn’t talk to your mother that way.

Speechless and stunned senseless, Charm319 left the table, leaving behind her dignity and as it happens, her considerable chip lead.

DottieDanger: she gone?

x_SuperMario: think so.

DottieDanger: haha. sucka.

Player Spotlight: TCCY!

Every week one of our stellar players is selected to appear in the Player Spotlight. They snag a HollywoodPoker.com tournament ticket for being selected; you get the invaluable satisfaction of getting to know a little bit more about the people sitting at your table. Talk about a win-win situation!

If you wish to be considered for the Player Spotlight, just e-mail me at hollay@hollywoodpoker.com.

In this week’s Player Spotlight: TCCY!

My name is Chris Yandek. I reside in Miami, Florida and am a college student and sports and entertainment journalist. My job has given me the opportunity to have interviewed sports personalities including Evander Holyfield, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Emmitt Smith, Ahman Green, Tom Brady, 1996 Heisman Trophy Winner Danny Wuerffel, and many others.

The best freerolls I have ever seen are the ones on Hollywood Poker. There can be anywhere from 100 to 300 people in them. On so many other sites you have 5000 people in one freeroll. The odds are so stacked against you.

One day in May on a Sunday evening I choose to play the $20 Hollywood Poker freeroll. There were 238 players and a few hours later I won the entire game with two pairs queens and three's. It was a real thrill to finally win a freeroll tournament. The odds were definitely in my favor!

Write to Win

Let’s face it: you’re here because you love poker and since passion breeds inspiration, we want you to write about it! We’ll post your submission in the forums and your fellow players will vote for their favorite. The player whose submission receives the most votes wins a HP tournament ticket and a random voter snags HP gear.

Every week, HollywoodPoker.com encourages you to write on our weekly poker-related topic and send your submission to julie@hollywoodpoker.com. Use any form you’d like: An article, short-story, poem, song, anything!
This week’s Write to Win topic is ‘Your Dream Table’. Who would you most like to pit your skills against?

Congratulations to last week’s Write to Win champ, Skallagrim45, whose article on smack-talk redefined it as an art form!

Read Skallagrim45’s winning submission:

First, I generally dislike smack talk and usually refrain from it (see my post in the Weekly Poll for more), but a connoisseur is one who appreciates the finer points of the subject, be it food, wine or anything else. So the question to me is: are there finer points to smack talk? And my answer is yes - the finest smack talk is smack talk that shuts up other smack talkers, and I am definitely a connoisseur of that.

Working every day in a profession built on talking and arguing (yes I am a lawyer) gives me some experience in using language to manipulate the thinking of others. It also helps that I have a degree in linguistic philosophy. Everyone I know avoids a serious argument with me, but enjoys a friendly argument because of my quick wit, generally pleasant nature, and good turn of a phrase. I use the same skills once I've decided to confront a "smack" talker (ST) at the tables.

Of course, anyone can truly infuriate the smack talkers by simply ignoring them - but for those of us with the skills, a little smart smack back can go along way!

First, one may disarm the ST with some indirect humor: "I'm sorry, what was the name of your championship poker book again?"

If that doesn’t work, a remark specifying the limited value of their own play usually does - or at least starts them on a less offensive defense of themselves: "Yup, him calling with a 10-4 suited was almost as bonehead as when you raised with your 8-9 OS."

And finally, you can push any smack talker to near meltdown by pretending to join them in the talk and then turn it on them fast; "yeah, what an idiot, reminds me of the ball-less idiots I played with the last time I was in __(insert the talker's home state/town or other info gleaned from nickname or table listing), I'll tell you no one from there should even be allowed to play poker."

I'll save my last tricks for future encounters. In sum, though I dislike smack talk in general, sometimes you do have to fight fire with fire. Then I like to think: yes, I am a connoisseur of this stuff.

But like any true connoisseur, I like my smack talk in very small choice bits, that have an artistic, gourmet flair, and I disdain the cheap, mean stuff.

Vince Van Patten’s Corner: My Challenge to You!

Last week, I announced that I’d be playing a Hollywood Poker specific $.25/$.25 no-limit table game with a $25 maximum buy-in on Wednesday at 10pm EST.

Since I had such a great time playing in Wednesday’s no-limit game, I want to do it again. In HollywoodPoker.com tournaments, I play loose and simply like to have a good time and chat with everyone. Still, for best results and my A-game, my specialty is no-limit poker. So, to show all the members and poker enthusiasts out there my A-game, I’m going to play a series of 1 hour no-limit games. I'm playing all out and I'm playing to win.

I know there are some great no-limit players that are going to test me - all the more fun! We'll be keeping track of how I do in the upcoming months and I'm betting that I'll be ahead. Even if I am ahead, though, anything I win I’ll throw it back in a freeroll tournament that will be determined at a later date. Last week I was up $46.60. That could go right on to your bankroll! These no-limit games are a fun way for me to play my best game, to challenge my own skill, to chat a lot with other players, and above all, lots of no-limit A-game poker.

Join me this Wednesday night at 10pm EST and see how you’re A-game measures up!
