Hollywood Hills

Last week in Hollywood Hills, readers were taken on an emotional thrill-ride as Hollywood Poker’s Player Manager, Julie, battled her inner-demons and finally won out thanks to an auspiciously timed e-mail from a player.

With all right again in the HP office, it was business as usual. Well, as usual as anything at Hollywood Poker ever is...

It was common knowledge that Hollywood Poker’s editor, Hollay, was somewhat of a poker anomaly and Mike decided to take it upon himself to reel in and refine her technique.

“You’re a rogue, Hollay - a wild card. Poker is about skill, dedication, patience. You’re...well, you’re...”

“Lacking?” Hollay offered.

“Well, yes. I’d like to invite you to my weekly poker game. It’d be good for you. It starts at 8pm. Bring some cheese puffs.”

Hollay accepted and spent the rest of the day brooding over how she was going to take Mike down and cause irreparable damage to his reputation right in front of his friends. As far as she was concerned, victory was in the bag.

That night, at the appointed 8pm, Hollay showed up with her master plan and of course, the cheese puffs.

The game started much like any other poker game. The pendulum swing of Lady Luck’s good graces left all the players on tilt, adamantly defending their precious chip-stacks and fragile egos.

Three hours later, the cheese puffs were dwindling and it was down to Hollay and Mike – head to head, mono a mono, dedicated horticulturalist against fanatic turophile. Never before had anyone seen such skill, rapier wit and persistence executed in a single game.

Never, that is, until the kitchen door burst open and Hollywood Poker’s esteemed player, Ella9750 emerged from a haze of smoke, dazzling in a pair of gold capris and a cowboy hat and offering forth a bag of cheese puffs.

“Mind if I join?” she asked, flashing a truly daunting smile.

Mike and Hollay exchanged a weary glance. They’d heard other players marvel at her merciless tactics and unrivalled playing.

“Sure,” Mike responded uneasily. “Pull up a chair”.

That night, Hollay and Mike learned humility. They were slapped by the cold hand of shame, crushed under the oppressive boot-heel of defeat. Though unknown to them at the time, they’d walk into the office in the morning changed people.

Later, Hollay would confess, “I never saw it coming. I mean, it was like rapid-fire”.

Mike would concur in a teary-eyed admission. “I still can’t get my mind around it. Horrible...just horrible”.

Those that were not blinded by shock remember it something like this:

Final hand.

Pre-flop:

Hollay: A,A

Mike: A,K

Ella9750: 7,2 OS

Flop: 3, 7, 2.

Hollay and Mike bet hard.

Ella9750 calls.

Turn: K.

The air is thick with anticipation. Hollay’s face is smudged with simulated cheese flavoring. No one says anything because they feel awkward for her.

River: 7.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Always the considerate player, Ella9750 left the rest of the cheese puffs for Hollay and Mike to munch on while lamenting their luck.

Still, the tables can always turn, and in Hollywood Hills, plot development dictates that they always do – but we want your help to decide what’s going to happen next week!

Will...

  • Mike and Hollay lose all faith in poker and existence in general and journey to a Buddhist temple to seek truth and meaning?
  • The first ever Hollywood Poker ‘Bring Your Child to Work Day’ end in bloodshed when Julie brings her cats?
  • A Hollywood Poker player discover that the most notorious smack-talker on the site is actually the player's mother?

This week's Spotlight: xxMorpheusxx!

Hello, Hollywood Poker!

My player name is xxMorpheusxx, but you all know me as either Morph, Morp or Morpheus!

I am 29 years old and have been hooked on Texas Hold’em for about a year now. I have tried to play at other sites, but there are always too many other people playing than talking.

As some of you may or may not know, I have a Graduate Diploma as a Network Engineer and as a Computer Specialist. Currently (due to the decline in the economy) I am seeking to further my education and bank account by becoming a Real Estate Agent.

My plan here at HP is to play the freeroll tournaments to gain access to other tournaments. After all, if you can make it in the shark tank they call a freeroll, then you can make it anywhere. After that, I plan to be IN the WSOP. I know I can make it there after having made it here.

As for anybody just starting out in this great game, NEVER give up. I am proof positive that anyone can play the game. I have been in 60 + freerolls to only finish in the money ONCE. My point is I don’t give up. I have played tight – loose – aggressive and a combination of the three. All you need in No Limit is a chip and a chair to win. Of course, a little luck goes a short way, too.

In closing, I’d just like to tell you all that I truly do enjoy playing here at HP, bad beats and all.

Until next time, I’m all-in!
~xxMorpheusxx

This week’s topic is ‘Talk the talk’. Do you consider yourself a connoisseur of smack-talk?

Congratulations to minidoyleb, who wrote a killer article on the topic of ‘Life Lessons from Poker’. Also, congratulations to Skallagrim45 who has won HP gear just for voting.

 Read minidoyleb’s winning submission!

Sitting in my computer chair typing this, I'm trying to think about all the life lessons poker has taught me and which ones are the most important.

For one, I think poker has taught me to be patient and wait. Just by sitting at the table and waiting for that big hand that doubles you up or knocks out an opponent.

Another lesson would be to not be so greedy. For example, if someone traps you with a hand bigger than yours and you call an all-in bet, you’re out and you got too greedy. Poker has taught me to take what I can get and don’t expect to always get it.

My third and final lesson poker has taught me is sportsmanship and how to lose with grace. Although I haven’t quite mastered this lesson yet, I have become more humble since I started playing poker and I have become a better loser.

So in conclusion poker is a game filled with many life lessons and it’s up to you to figure out which ones it has taught you but these are the top three that poker has taught me.

Vince Van Patten’s Corner: My Challenge to You!

So you think you know poker? I’ll be bringing my game to the tables here at Hollywood Poker and I’m challenging you to try to bust me out. Not only is this an opportunity for all you would-be poker stars out there to net some cash, but you could even earn some bragging rights for having knocked me out.

You can track me down at a Hollywood Poker specific $.25/$.25 NL table with a $25 maximum buy-in and join in. Remember, Hollywood Poker specific tables are marked with the double asterisk(**). I will be there on August 3rd at 10pm EST.  If I get knocked out, then everyone at the table will split a $100 bonus prize.  So c’mon! Give it your best shot. Take a seat with me and see if you’ve got the poker skills to take me out!

~Vince Van Patten
