You’ve paid your dues, played long and hard and now you’re looking for some recognition. HollywoodPoker.com is here to help! Every week, one of our fabulous players snags a HP tournament ticket when they are featured in the Player Spotlight section of the Extra. This is a great way to let the HollywoodPoker.com community learn a little more about who they sit next to at the tables and chat with in the lobby and on the forums.

If you want your chance in the spotlight, e-mail me at hollay@hollywoodpoker.com and I will notify you within a week if you are selected.

Meet this week’s featured player, gnial – a man light on the words, but heavy on the action:

I am a 45 year old law enforcement officer from New Jersey. In 6 months, I will be retiring. I started playing online poker about 2 years ago and I often travel to Atlantic City for poker tournaments. My best tournament ended with my placing 3rd and winning $2000. Once I have retired, I plan on moving to the west coast and working in the Private Investigations field.

Other than playing online poker at HollywoodPoker.com, I like to travel, play golf and I love to cook gourmet food. I also enjoy spending time with my two children and one grandchild.

Here’s how it works: You compose your bit of literary genius, send it to julie@hollywoodpoker.com and if you are chosen as a finalist, you submission will be posted in the forums for your fellow players to vote on. The person with the most votes wins a tournament ticket and a random voter snags stylish HP gear.

 This week’s topic:

Lucky You: Tell us all about your best poker game ever!

Congratulations to last week’s Write to Win champ, honey_comb1 and to our random voter, pillager12!

 Honey_comb1’s winning submission:

Thank you Hollywood Poker for the opportunity to not only partake in the WSOP Celebrity Shootout, but also for allowing the opportunity to share my experience with everyone.

I have been a member of Hollywood Poker since January and continue to have some great times with the members and staff. I never considered myself an excellent Hold’em player. In fact, the opposite would apply to me. I had no idea how to play the game but I have learned some strategies from watching other players and reading tips from the forum.

Although I continued to go up and down in winnings, it wasn't until I got to play a tournament with James Woods that I got a tickle and gained some confidence. Just
Everyday I would check out the WSOP tournament information and watch great player names join the list along with the celebrity names – and there were lots of them! I knew I would play it, but more for the social aspect than as a serious contender. I joined the $2 tournament that Hollywood Poker offered as a chance to win a seat at the WSOP Shootout. After 5 tries, I finally won that ticket. So, I was in like flint.

The start of the Shootout was the gathering of all gatherings. The social hour before the Shootout was in itself an incredible time, where well wishes and laughter rang out between celebrities and players making a thrilling adventure even more thrilling because of the wonderful moments to remember.

Now the game: I wasn't really paying much attention to my playing strategy in the beginning and I'm still not sure when I realized I was catching some serious cards and my stack was increasing quickly. I was so into the social aspect of it that I didn’t realize how well I was doing until another member pointed it out!

Excited and in great spirits, I started to pay the game the attention it deserved. I made it to the final three, realizing not only how lucky I was, but realizing what an incredibly close and tight group we have here at Hollywood Poker. That day, we stood as one, no matter who won! We were ALL going to the WSOP in the name of Hollywood Poker.

The encouragement and support I received from everyone in the lobby truly brought tears to my eyes and kept me from becoming a nervous wreck. I am proud to have met the people here and to be apart of this Hollywood Poker Community.

I have had some fun moments, ranging from the head to head tournament, the tournament
with James Woods and now, placing 3rd in the WSOP Shootout.

What's next? I can hardly wait to see! Good luck to everyone and again, THANK YOU for your support and friendship.

Vince Van Patten's Corner: Be all you can be - play poker!

The ups and downs in poker have helped me in other parts of life – especially because I play for such high stakes.

In a sense, the way you respond to the flux in poker is very spiritual and philosophical. It defines who you are. Can you pick yourself up when you’re low? Do you let the highs go to your head? For me personally, the way I play poker says a lot about who I am in life in general.

Without experiencing the ups and downs at the poker table, I wouldn’t be so prepared when life’s other ups and downs happen. As it stands, poker has conditioned me for life’s bumps.

To get more specific, I think that there is a correlation between playing sports and playing poker. You have to be prepared and sharp to play your best game.

For example, when I was on the tennis tour, it was all about the homework – in other words, training. Same goes for poker – or anything else you want to excel at in life actually. It takes discipline and heart to be able to ride out the ups and downs.
