Poker World: Making Your Pad Poker Friendly

When I asked a recently divorced friend how he plans to make his new home a poker haven, he said, “I'll stay single.” Point taken, but much like his ex-wife, I was unsatisfied. I turned to the Hollywood Poker Community for some less embittered advice.

Here's what a few of them had to offer:

Always have a deck of Royal 100% plastic cards. Any fool can deal with them. ~Lisamarie20

1. An extra refrigerator. There's never enough beer/soda/drinks in the house and you don't need a bunch of coolers for everyone to trip over and run out of ice. A full bar is even better.
2. A pool table. Something to keep the guys busy who have been knocked out of the first tournament and are waiting for the next one to start. Get good, and you might make even more money on the side. Got too many poker players and not enough tables? Put a cover on the pool table and you've got a table that easily seats 10 players. Although you might need a bunch of bar stools so that everyone sits high enough around the table.
3. Folding card tables with poker tops. While a genuine poker table like they have at the casinos would be great, we don't all the room for them. And you can convince your spouse you need the card tables and chairs for when all the relatives come over at Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter.
4. I agree with Lisamarie20 on the Royal plastic cards. I've brought mine to a couple of home games and the guys love them. They snap back flat to the table and don't crease. And you can often find them for a lot better price than some of the more expensive brands. (I paid $3.50 for a bridge-size double deck and $2.50 a deck for Poker sized cards out at a Flea Market in Arizona).
5. Decent poker chips. How many times do you have to explain to people what the denominations are of your chips? "Red, White, Blue - $25, $100, $500", and your other buddy's house it's "Green, Black, Purple", or whatever. Pick yourself up a set up chips with denominations on them.
6. Did I mention the beer yet?

My extra laptop sits on a TV tray next to my spot on the couch.
Plop down. Log in. Put a pillow on my lap. (Those laptops can generate heat!) Extend the foot rest.
Must have water.
During long tourneys I can unplug, set the computer on the countertop, and prepare dinner between hands.
Did I mention 5 minute showers on tourney breaks?

Words from Vince Van Patten, WPT Host & Commentator

Not being over-confident is a strength in poker. If you go to a table when you’re too eager, you’re more likely to lose your head then lose your money. Knowing how to keep yourself level is a great competitive advantage.

In honor of Father’s Day, I’d like to typify off-spring/parent relations and blame my father for everything; especially introducing me to poker.

He claims I would have come to it on my own, but I remain firm in my belief that my sapling familiarity with poker would have never flourished into the wild affair it is now without his encouragement. So Dad, I blame you. I blame you for the thousands I’ve managed to make at the tables, the fantastic people I’ve met (including my fiancée, Deb), and the incredible memories I have now as well as the ones to come.

It may be a day late, but I’d still like to wish my father and all the other fathers at Hollywood Poker (like Dick Van Patten, who raised two fierce poker playing boys, Vince and Jimmy) a Happy Father’s Day!

Keep givin'er at the tables!

~GettaGrip

Write to Win

Express your creativity by entering Hollywood Poker's popular Write to Win contest. If your entry is chosen as a finalist, you could win a tournament ticket to one of Hollywood Poker's Celebrity Tournaments.

All you have to do is write about anything poker related and send it to hollay@hollywoodpoker.com. I’ll post all articles that qualify in the ‘Center Stage’ section of the Lounge where your fellow players will vote for their favorite article. Aside from the prestige and praise you’ll receive for your rhetorical brilliance, if you win you’ll also score a Hollywood Poker tournament ticket. It gets even better: Every week, one random voter will win Hollywood Poker gear.
