Poker World: Why Poker's Gone to the Girls

The women at Hollywood Poker alone are proof positive that the ladies are hitting the poker scene hard, busting bankrolls and turning heads - and really, it's no surprise. These days it seems women and poker are a winning combination. Of course, it wasn’t always this way. I think Gloria Steinem summed up the past relationship between women and poker brilliantly: “Someone once asked me why women don’t gamble as much as men do, and I gave the commonsensical reply that we don’t have as much money. That was a true, but incomplete answer. In fact, women’s total instinct for gambling is satisfied by marriage.”

Well, kick down the barriers and break out the bubbly – recent research has shown that all over the world, less and less ladies are saying “I do”. What’s the pay-off of abstaining from matrimonial bliss, you might ask? Aside from a steady rise in households with toilet paper actually on the roll and a marked decrease in women suffering from post-bride’s maid taffeta anxiety, there’s also an increase in women with expendable funds, spare time and a little more mental energy to burn – and what better way to make the most of this surplus than at the poker tables. They are hitting the poker scene hard, bringing with them a refreshing perspective on the game which includes solid play, cunning tactics and mercifully, a much needed sense of style. We are finally witnessing a much needed depletion in flowered shirts and jogging pants – all due to a well-timed infusion of the double X chromosome.

Hollywood Poker’s got some of the hottest players on the net and every single tournament is a testament to the fact a lot of those players are our ladies.

Hey there! Thought you all might find this a bit amusing. It's kind of my own personal mantra that I use when I play at HollywoodPoker.com.

Why you don't play pocket pairs against me:

- Because I have seen the "Rockets' Red Glare" as I bust them with 89 suited.

- Because I like to "Brokeback Mountain" players who fall in love with two cowboys.

- Because I'd rather be "straight" than hang out with a couple of queens.

- Because I know that fish hooks can prick you just as easy as they prick the fish if you handle them wrong.

- Because I think 1010 is binary code for "dominated".

- Because even Wayne Gretzy took a puck in the face sometimes.

- Because snowmen melt under a warm heart flush.

- Because walking sticks are for the "crippled".

- Because Route 66 is the slow lane now.

- Because 55 is for the slow lane now.

- Because, honestly, what good is your .44 if I have the bullets?

- Because, hey, the dealer gave you crabs...can that really be a good thing?

- Because if you squeeze two ducks too hard, they're gonna crap on you.
