Poker Coach

This month the Poker Coach tackles a question from a player who busted out early. Take a look:

 Dan asks:

I have $4700 in chips, am on the button and the blinds are $100-$200. With pocket kings I raise 4 callers to $600, who all call again. $3200 in the pot and the flop comes 3 of spades, 4 of diamonds and 6 of spades. It’s checked to me and I bet $2500. Only the cut-off calls. I have $1600 versus her $1500. The turn is a Jack and she made her flush, holding 10 & 7 of spades. It was only the 5 th hand and everyone started with $5000. What did I do wrong?

Coach Responds:

I think your first raise was too small. As a general rule, you want to raise 3 times the big blind if you're the first to open the pot and then add an additional big blind for every player who calls in front of you. In this case that would be about 1400.

On the flop, your only move when checked to is to push all-in. You should never bet so much that you leave yourself with less than 2x your bet behind. In other words, if you had 3000 chips, do not bet anything more than 1000 out of this, and if you want to bet more than 1000, you have to push all-in. In this case, pushing all-in on the flop was the correct play even though you had 4100 in chips, because the pot was so big that you needed to try to take it down immediately, and you were pot-committed. Never bet off $2500 from a $4100 stack - either bet 1200 (or less if appropriate) or push. If you bet $2500, you're pot-committing yourself, and you might as well just shove all of it in to protect against draws as best you can.

Your opponent's play is irrelevant - I don't like their play at all (she would have been better off betting out the flop instead of check/calling a huge bet), but if I had been your opponent, I probably would still have put all my chips in on the flop since they have around 12 outs to your range of possible hands in this spot (although sometimes more, sometimes less). While she was 'risking all her chips to hit a flush', she probably thought she had more outs than just the flush (she did, by the way, because any 5, or combination of 7/T or 9/8 on the turn/river she also wins). She may have had the weaker of the two hands, but I think her play was less flawed and more straightforward than yours.

I think if you raise properly preflop, though, she'll fold. And if you shove the flop after betting properly preflop and she still calls, you've done everything you can to protect your hand and make them make a mistake. Played as it was, however, you provided your opponent with an opportunity to catch.

Good luck at the tables!
