Celebrity Poker Night with Ronny Cox: Win More!

Every new Celebrity Host brings something a little different to Celebrity Poker Night and this coming week’s host, Ronny Cox, is no exception. If you knock out a Celebrity in this tournament, not only will you snag a $25 Celebrity Bounty, but as an added bonus, you’ll win an autographed copy of Ronny’s phenomenal double CD, Ronny Cox at Sabastiani Theatre.

Hailed by critics as intensely moving, Ronny’s music has been described as, “magic to charm many a cloudy day; it will bring some sunshine to your world.” One critic raves,
“Although Ronny Cox has achieved considerable success on film— Beverly Hills Cop and Deliverance among his more than 50 movies—and television, his musical performances on these two CDs will also prove enduring.”

Looks like Ronny can play some mean guitar as well as some serious poker – let’s see how you stack up against him at the tables.

Join us on Tuesday, February 28th at 10pm EST for Celebrity Poker Night with Ronny Cox for a low buy-in of $5+.50. Visit www.ronnycox.com to learn more about Ronny.

Our last Celebrity Poker Night was hosted by Donnie Wahlberg (Boomtown, The Sixth Sense) and we witnessed the biggest turnout to date. Donnie had a great time chatting in the lobby about past performances. Players praised him for his role in Saw II and were anxious to know about future endeavors. Thanks to everyone who came out to kick off the week at Celebrity Poker Night with Donnie Wahlberg.

In this week’s Spotlight, meet riverat775!

Hey everyone! My name is Mike (a.k.a. riverat775). I got the name because I would always would on the river card when playing in house games, so the name stuck. The ‘775’ is the prefix number where I live.

Anyway, I have been playing poker for about 7 years now. I have won a lot of money but probably have lost more! I have done some pretty wild things to play poker in my life.
There was the time I made a huge commission check and blew about 2 grand in 2 days. Or maybe the time I played in a big freeroll so I had to miss church. Once, I turned my house into a card room made my wife cook food for the boys!

Yeah, poker and me we go hand in hand. I love the feeling when you are down to the last card and you know you’re behind but then that last card hits and there - on that fifth card - you find your salvation, so you check, your opponent comes out betting, you act, wait for a minute then come over the top. He never knew what hit him! Poker definitely can get the best of you and make you do some crazy things. My craziest thing is never knowing when enough is enough. So the craziest thing I have done for poker is not ever giving up!

Shuffle up and deal! See you at the tables!

WINTER WOES

The conditions were horrendous, to say the very least,
Weather not fitting for either man or beast.
The northern winds were howling at gale force speeds,
And the snow accumulating was far beyond his needs.
The temperature continued falling toward the freezing mark,
And the graying skies were becoming ominously dark.
He had brought in his pets, and settled them by the fire.
Knowing the blizzard would increase with each passing hour.
The storm wasn’t a surprise, only normal this time of year,
So he had lain in provisions, and stocked up on winter gear.
He promised himself he wouldn’t rant, yell or curse,
And try his very best to serenely survive the worse.
But being alone in a cabin in the deep Alaskan woods,
Meant needing more than jackets with insulated hoods.
Phone service had yet to reach his remote part of the wilds,
And neighbors were scattered thinly over long and lonely miles.
So humans were forced to communicate in the only way they could,
By using CB radios, and a language that only they understood.
He had settled in his cabin two months before the storm arrived,
Determined to write a manuscript if his spirit and soul survived.
The words and muse flowed freely when he first began the task,
But his inspiration ran and hid with the onset of winters’ mask.
He’d been certain that isolation was what was required
To help him write his novel now that he was retired.
A life of medical service, and tending to other people’s ills,
Had provided a comfortable life, and had always paid the bills.
But his soul and his sanity had paid a very steep price,
And the pressures to succeed drove him to drink and vice.
His wife of thirty years eventually reached the breaking point,
And demanded an end to his gambling and to the gin-joints.
But habits that are firmly ingrained have a way of dying hard,
Whether they’re the turn of a lady’s ankle, or the turn of a card.
His marriage ended badly, as most all sinners’ marriages do,
Teaching a lesson he wasn’t taught while attending school
So he retreated to the cabin, hoping to find peace and solace there,
Burdened by an anguish that was almost more than he could bear.
But the days passed quickly, folding themselves one into the next,
And words began filling the pages with beautiful flowing text.
Then the storm began its rampage, like a monster unleashed from a cage,
And he braced against its onslaught as though it were a war to be waged.
His writings and his thoughts were enough to comfort him at first,
But the winds brought with them reminders of a very deep thirst.
The lack of human contact was beginning to make its presence known,
And the seeds of loneliness his wife had planted were now fully grown.
He began to pace the floor, his emotions teetering on the edge,
As though he were clinging desperately to a mountain ledge.
But being a man of science, he quickly diagnosed his woes,
And prescribed himself a cure that every human knows.
He needed to be with humans who understood his needs,
And indulge in spirited laughter, and partake of joyous deeds.
But that was wishful thinking with a blizzard raging through the hills,
And a wind-chill factor so sever it was the kind that stealthily kills.
Only the direst of emergencies could force him into the storm,
Something such as a difficult pregnancy of a mother’s first-born.
But then the CB crackled to life, as if someone was reading his mind,
And informed him his presence was needed by others of his kind.
He listened to the message that came amid the noise of the wind,
And presented him with options that were difficult to defend.
He knew if he didn’t go he was trapped with memories of his wife,
But also knew that if he went he was definitely risking his life.
So, he put out food and water to sustain his pets while he was away,
Not knowing if he would ever return or be back the next day.
He pushed aside thoughts of dangers that were lurking in the night,
Certain that what he was about to do was only proper and right.
He leaned hard against the wind as he made his way to his garage,
Ignoring the relentless blizzard as though it were only a mirage.
His vehicle started easily, and he drove timidly into the gale,
Fully realizing the dire consequences if the engine should fail.
Visibility was severely limited, barely reaching beyond the hood,
But he proceeded cautiously onward, doing the best that he could.
His truck was buffeted violently by the uncompromising storm,
Making driving treacherous amid the drifts beginning to form.
The trip to the nearest settlement normally took an hour or so.
But the blinding snow made this journey tedious and slow.
After what seemed an eternity, he finally saw a dim light,
And a tiny cabin beckoned warmly through the stormy night.
He shut off the engine and trudged through the deepening snow,
And found his way to the cabin brightened with a warm glow.
Seven men were there talking in hushed and reverent tones,
And he listened intently as he attempted to thaw his frozen bones.
Blizzards have killed many people, and will surely kill many more,
But death can be avoided behind a closed and shuttered door.
Only the brave or fool-hearted would venture into such a storm,
Leaving the comfort of a cabin that was safe, snug and warm.
But this particular blizzard, with its dangers definite and real,
Were erased when one of the men said, “Shuffle up and deal!”

Words from Vince Van Patten, WPT Host and Commentator

When you are playing at higher stakes games, there are a few things you can do to maximize your chances of coming out on top.

For one, it’s important to know your opponents well. This means you really have to be good at reading people; knowing what they’re thinking and how they’re reacting to situations. For example, it’s always a good idea to look for the guy who’s tilted. He’ll be more likely to make a bad call than a more relaxed and calm player.

Which brings me to my next point: Make sure you are rested. You don’t want to be the player making poor decisions and going on-tilt. Make sure you’re not an easy target.

It’s also helpful to avoid no-limit games when playing higher-stakes. In no-limit, you can lose everything in one hand. Make sure you can afford it – that you don’t go beyond your means while caught up in the rush. This is also why it’s always good practice to come to the table short-stacked. The night can last longer even it turns bad.
