Play in a Private $1,000 Celebrity Tournament

Fun, fame and fortune – it’s a sweet spread and it could be yours. We’ve been tracking the hottest players during the month of February on the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic Top 5 Leader Board. At the end of the month, the 5 players who’ve continually played their A-game will split $1,000 (the exact amount depending on overall ranking) and gain entry into an exclusive online $1,000 Celebrity tournament with the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic’s special February host, Josh Malina and 4 of his Celebrity pals. So far, we’ve reserved seats for Nicole Sullivan, Donnie Wahlberg and Mimi Rogers. Stay tuned to the Extra to find out who the final player will be.

In fact, Josh also hosted the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic during January and he brought the same fantastic perks with him. The top 5 players from last month got to pit their skills against Josh, Kelli Williams, Nicholas Gonzalez, Kevin Pollak and Stephen Collins. In the end, it was a surprised Celebrity that walked away the winner. Stephen Collins still can’t quite believe his luck:

I was just trying not to embarrass myself - didn't want to be the first celeb to go out.  I managed to slow play two pair against Kelli Williams, and she went out.  Shortly after that, Kevin Pollak was gone, and then Josh.  Then it was just me against four of the five top winners on HollywoodPoker.com.  You have to have luck to win a tournament.  I held pocket Kings three times, but they only went to a flop once.  Suddenly, I was the final celeb, and then I just wanted to finish in the money - the top 3.  It went quickly and I managed to hang on and double up a couple of times.  There were only three or four head-to-head hands.  The final hand was junk on both sides, with me holding 9s-10c against URHuckleberry's Ah-5c.  It was still Ace high after the turn, but a beautiful, luscious 10 came on the River and a graphic popped up on my screen that said, 'You have finished 1st out of 10 players.'  I'm still pinching myself.

It’s safe to say that luck only played a small part in Stephen’s winning combination. Great game everyone!

Make sure you’re part of the action next time and give our Celebrities a run for their money!

In this week’s Spotlight, meet SecondPlace!

Hello everyone. My name is SecondPlace and I have been playing on Hollywood Poker for over a year. I have played at numerous sites in the past but I have the most fun playing here with all of you great people - and the not so great ones that always take my money. (Not you JimMorrison8.)

I think the players and the support here are what set this site above the rest and I will continue to drown on the river here until I run out of cash.

I can usually be found in the $50 short handed Sit ‘n’ Go tables or in the lobby chatting with some friends. If you ever want to play let me know. I am always ready to play -except for when my 10 month old twins won't let me!

See everyone at the FINAL table.

~SecondPlace

Write to Win: The Crazy Things We Do For Poker

I'm sure MOST of us have done the basic crazy things that one must do from time to time to enjoy a session with our fellow rounders: Sending the significant other off to the spa for the day; waking up at 3am to play a tourney before heading off to work; playing a tourney while at work; ditching those annoying relatives early on Thanksgiving to log on to Hollywood Poker! This list is of course much longer, but those of you out there that do these things as frequently as possible know the rest by heart.

This one though - this one takes the cake for me.

There was a stop on the WPT at a local casino a few years back, and a few of my buddies and I were pumped to get into the action. None of us stood a chance of coming up with the cash to play the $10,000 main event, but we all had made enough in some recent ring game sessions to ante up for the $1,500 event. That was it though. Between the lot of us, we couldn't come up with enough money to get a hot dog let alone a hotel room after we bought our seats. We knew this was going to be major problem because the traffic getting into town coupled with the lack of parking during an event like this would leave us arriving way too late for the 10 am start. (I guess I should mention that when I said local casino, we're about two and a half hours away.) Even if we made it on time one of us would most certainly be stuck circling around trying to find a spot to park. So we came up with a plan! Four days before the tour made their stop there, we staked out a front row parking space and the one next to it. We then parked my car just enough over the line between both spaces to assure no one else could fit their car between mine and the pillar that stood on the opposite side of the second spot. Genius, right?

Now we could drive another car down to be assured of a spot when we got there and after I would move my car over. Just one problem: The parking garage reserved for non-hotel guests had a 24 hour limit with a ‘towed at owner's expense’ penalty. I mentioned that we could not afford much at this point, so no one was willing to take the chance of having to bail there car out of the impound only to loose our parking spot as well.

Luckily though, gas prices were not what there are now so we decided to take turns driving down and swapping cars every day until the day of the tourney! That is dedication! We logged some total of 35 hours of driving just to go play with the pros! Crazy yes, but definitely worth it!

Words from Vince Van Patten, WPT Host and Commentator

Dealing with maniacs at the table can be tricky, but here are a few tips to help you out:

1) Leave your ego out of the game. These overly aggressive players are trying to get you upset and use this weakness against you.
2) Wait until you have a solid hand to act and then lay it on the maniacs.
3) Know your limits. Play stakes you are comfortable with and stick to the type of poker you are comfortable playing. For example, if you usually play Hold’em, you’re more likely to make mistakes playing a game like Omaha, since it will entice you to game more – and this is not something you want to do with a maniac at your table.

There are no guarantees when these wild cards are at your table, but I think following these 3 pieces of advice can help you avoid major damage.
