Celebrity Poker Night with Bob Goen

Nothing says ‘love’ like a winning hand and charming company. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that Bob Goen will be hosting the Valentine’s Celebrity Poker Night. Audiences nationwide recognize Bob as the quick-witted and charismatic former host of Entertainment Tonight. On Tuesday, February 14th at 10pm EST, he’ll be using his talents to host Hollywood Poker’s newest Celebrity tournament.

The buy-in is $5+.50, the $25 Celebrity Bounties are plentiful and the experience is priceless.

Celebrity Poker Night with Brad Sherwood, which took place this past Tuesday, was perhaps one of the most intense tournaments to date. Everyone played hard and the tables were packed with persistent, powerful and skilled players. Just goes to show great poker players stick together – and evidently at the same poker site.

Make the Scene with Josh Malina

Josh Malina is returning as the host of the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic during February and he’s bringing the same great deals with him. Once again, we’ll be tracking the top 5 players. Just like last time, these card-sharks will get to split $1,000 and take a seat in a $1,000 online tournament with Josh and 4 of his Celebrity pals.

During the month of January, thousands of players joined Celebrity Host Josh Malina for the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic. Out of the thousands, 5 incredible players trumped the competition and snagged spots on the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic Top 5 Leader Board. With the fame came the fortune. Not only did these hot-shots get to split $1,000, they also got to play in an exclusive $1,000 online Celebrity tournament with Josh Malina, Stephen Collins, Nicholas Gonzalez, Kevin Pollak and Kelli Williams this past Saturday.

It was a great game with lots of amazing hands and close calls. In the end, Celebrity Player Stephen Collins (7th Heaven) walked away with a healthy boost to his bankroll and his ego. Great playing!

In this week’s Spotlight, meet lady3866!

HOWDY!

My name is Deanne, a.k.a. Lady3866. The 3866 is from the number given to my grandparents on the boat when they came to America from Holland during WWII. It’s my way of reminding myself how hard others have worked for me to be here today.

I was married at a very young age and that lasted for 18 1/2 years. I am now single and not really looking to change that, at least not any time soon. I have 4 children, 3 girls and 1 boy, and 3 grandchildren, 2 girls and 1 boy. My girls are all happily married and my son is living with his dad. I love my children to death but I have to say it’s a lot more fun to be the gamma!

I have been playing poker for some 20 years now but online for only a year or so. I know I am not a real great player but I do have a real great time playing and in my mind that’s the only objective. I am a nurse, LVN, and I work part-time in the OR and in labor & delivery at a local hospital. When I'm not there, I do medical transcribing from home over the internet while keeping on eye on my 1yr old granddaughter. I am also in school getting my BSN. When I get a free minute I like to read and go riding on my horse around the place, 33 1/2 acres right on the out skirts of town. I also scuba dive. I do some diving for the local police when they need such services.

I have two main thoughts about life. 1st- What doesn't kill me will make me stronger. 2nd- You are the sum total of all your experiences. Keeping those two things in mind I enjoy life because I know the worst thing that can happen is that I will get a little stronger and wiser. Not a bad thing to have happen to anyone.

I am so tickled about being in the Player Spotlight. I'm not much for being the center of attention but Hollywood Poker and all the players I chat with have made this easy. Y'all have made me feel special. Thank you so much. I hope to see you around the site. Good luck at the tables!

Write to Win: Prepping for a Big Game

For me, every game is a BIG game. Whether it is a 5-seat Sit & Go, a low stakes ring game, or a Poker Points Freeroll, I try to be pumped and primed when they shuffle up and deal.

Every day I try to spend at least 30 minutes studying something that has been written about poker, especially Texas Hold'em and strategies for playing online. I keep a book in each of my bathrooms, so I can "multi-task" when sitting on the john! I read and re-read e-books, newsletters and articles on a variety of poker sites. The more ammunition I can load into my brain, the more ammunition I can fire at my opponents.

I always do some stretching exercises before sitting down to play. It may be a long time before I have more a five minute break every hour. Often I will throw in a few more stretches during those short breaks or even between hands. I pay particular attention to my neck, shoulders and lower back. I don't want them to get tight and achy during the game.

I don't have the TV on while playing, but I do like to have some music to listen to. After making a selection of current favorite, I load the cd changer, grab the remote and get ready to "start the music".

Nothing is more distracting (to me anyway) than to have my stomach start growling 30 minutes into a multi-table tournament. To keep those tummy grumblings at bay and to provide some energy to sustain me through the rigors of bad beats, suck outs and finding salvation in the river, I usually eat a healthy meal or snack before it's time to start checking, calling and betting. I also fill up a liter bottle with cold water and keep it beside my computer monitor and I often have to refill it during a session. That makes my next and final preparation even more vital.

Last, but certainly not least, right before I'm going to start playing, I use the bathroom. There's enough pressure when deciding whether to make a big raise, fold a good hand, or go all-in without having the added demands of a full bladder. I don't want my Sit & Go to turn into a "sat & peed"!

Now you know how I prep for the big game. You'll have to excuse me now. I'm on the button with pocket rockets and a chip stack to be envied. See you at the tables!

Words from Vince Van Patten, WPT Host and Commentator

Back in the 90’s, when I was playing a late night game at the Horseshoe, Stuey – The Kid - Unger joined my table. He knew who I was – not only as a professional poker player, but also from Hollywood.

I was wearing an Armani suit. I like to dress nicely when I play. Needless to say, Stuey started to make jokes about the way I was dressed – you know, saying stuff like, “Hey, look at Mr. Hollywood.” Stuff like that. Of course, he was just trying to gain a physiological advantage over me. He was one of the poker greats and he (and everyone else there) knew it. He was just trying to play up the nuances and I made some fun of him too, so we all had a great time.

I also played once with ‘The Grand Old Man of Poker’ Johnny Moss, before he died. I remember he had a little peek cap on. There was a line up to play with him. He was around 85 then I guess.

Both of these poker legends are dead now and I have to say it was really a thrill to get to play with them.  I like to think I played my best and I feel that I did.
