Cash games, may it be Omaha, Stud or Texas Hold'em of which they are most famous for, employ a totally different approach and strategy compared to online poker tournaments, which you probably are more familiar with.
Firstly, in cash games the blinds will always stay reasonably small in proportion to stack sizes around the table, plus, you are allowed to buy more chips whenever you are at a low allowing you more control over your stack. The more evident difference between cash games and tournaments is you are allowed to play just one (1) hand and leave the game or play as many hands as you wish – this is because you cannot bust out of a cash game as long as you have a bankroll.
To play cash games you must remember that you're not trying to take out the entire table. All you've got to do is play your cards right and focus on making the best possible decision for each hand that will allow you to cash in on a steady flow of money ensuring you have a healthy bankroll.
Here are basic strategies you have to understand before hitting the cash game tables :
- Having a top pair is not as strong in cash games as in tournaments, but it is a good enough advantage to persevere in the game as opposed to tournaments where you would probably wait for a much better hand
- You have to be aggressive to win the pot even if you have a slight advantage - this by either having the best hand or having your opponent fold. With more at stake, weaker players will generally be more wary of calling and if they don't fold you might have the rare opportunity to steal a hand!
- You will need to hone in on reading your opponents and never let out that you are affected by the extreme ups and downs of cash games. Remaining calm gives your opponents a false reading on you and gives yourself an added advantage.
