Joseph Hachem
WSOP Championship Event Winner 2005 Earnings: $7.5 million
The 2005 World Series of Poker will always be a highlight in the poker career of Joseph Hachem. Hachem was armed with Texas Hold’em’s worst hand, a 7 and 3 unsuited, but it was enough to claim the WSOP championship and $7.5 million prize that accompanied the title.
Much has changed for Joseph Hachem since walking into the WSOP one year ago. Unlike the previous winners of the World Series of Poker, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker, Joseph Hachem paid for his own $10,000 tournament buy-in. The two previous winners had made their way to the WSOP on an online poker company’s dime. Now Joseph Hachem is much more wealthy and is even going into the 37th World Series of Poker as a favorite.
Last year’s WSOP win secured Joseph Hachem a spot in professional poker history by being the fourth non-American winner of the prestigious poker tournament.
Hachem was born in Lebanon – he and his family moved to Australia at a young age. But before earning his wages at the poker tables, Hachem was a chiropractor. An unusual blood disorder in his hands caused Hachem to put down his prescription pad in favor of a poker face – it has been a great move so far.
