John McCann
In my youth I attended St Peter's RC primary school before attending St Augustine's RC secondary school in Scarborough. I ran the chess club before becoming chess champion, remaining unbeaten in any competition throughout primary and secondary education. Also, during secondary school I ran the computer club. It became evident even from an early age that I had a natural flare and understanding for mathematics and problem solving.
Continuing to explore this avenue, I attended Scarborough VIth Form College where I studied a GNVQ advanced in Business studies. After concluding my course, I worked for a few years gaining additional qualifications including NVQ1, NVQ2 and GNVQ intermediate in Information Technology. I worked as part of a team installing computer networks for major international banks including Werburg's and West Merchant Bank, before returning to study a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing in Scarborough. After graduating from my HND I went on to study a Bachelor of Science in Computing (BSc).
During the final year of my degree, I was elected team leader in many projects. One of the projects I embarked upon lead me to securing employment with a Management Consultancy Group named Interim Management Group (IMG). During my 18 months with IMG, I ran a variety of computing and business projects. I designed and developed a variety of software and information systems. I ended up starting my own Software Engineering business, McCann Software House (MSH).
MSH was established in March 2004. Unfortunately during the 12 months that followed, we were unable to secure the funding required to make it a viable business. Thus in March 2005, the business ceased trading.
It was at this point of my life, one of my very good friends introduced me to Poker, more specifically, Texas Hold Em. After only a few games it was apparent that I would one day be a formidable poker player. I started with winning home games, and during the year to follow I would make approximately $25,000, before finally winning a seat in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Hollywood Poker. The tournament was a free roll with 1094 players in which I had to win in order to secure my seat at the WSOP.
In conclusion, this is my first year at Poker and I have earned $25k and secured myself a seat in the WSOP. I am living every poker player's dream; to make the WSOP and rub shoulders with the stars of the game. To have accomplished this in my first year is a massive achievement. No matter what happens next, I am sure I will be back again and again.
