This year, the World Series of Poker has 8,773 competitors. That fact alone means this year is a record breaker in terms of just the sheer number of participants in a live poker event. In addition, the 2006 World Series of Poker breaks the prize record as well. The eventual winner is to take home $12 Million. Even players who place as low as 12th will be taking home a sizeable prize of $1 Million. The figures overshadow last year's considerably, with the total prize money increasing from last year's $54 Million to an amazing $82.5 Million this year.
"This World Series of Poker stands out as the best in the tournament's illustrious 37-year history," said Jeffrey Pollack (World Series of Poker Commissioner). "Never before have so many people from around the world competed for so much prize money and the honor of winning the most coveted prize in all of poker - the World Series of Poker champion's bracelet."
The final table of the World Series of Poker; 9 sharks playing Hold'Em, begins August 10th.
