Indy Racing League Race Track Flags There are eleven flags in the Indy Racing League, each symbolizing something different for drivers in the IRL. Every flag is an important element of a driver’s success and a racer’s safety. Imagine driving down the freeway during a rainy day and catching glimpse of a red and yellow striped flag informing you to slow down since the road is slippery. Also, instead of traffic lights there are officials waving red flags signaling you to stop and green flags signaling you to continue. Well, our driving experience may not be exactly like the one described, but this is the life of an Indy race car driver. There is much more to the Indy Racing League than the checkered flag at the finish line, allow Hollywood Poker to explain what each of the flags used in an IRL race signify. Go Flag The green flag signals the start of a practice session, qualification attempt, or a restart after a caution or red flag. Medical Flag The white and red cross flag signals a medical emergency or that an ambulance is on the course. Leader Flag The white flag is displayed when the leader has started his final lap.   Traction Flag The red and yellow striped flag signals that oil or some other substance is on the track, making it slippery. Stop Flag The red flag stops the race immediately. Pit Closure Flag The red flag with a yellow X signals that the pit area is closed. Caution Flag The yellow flag signals hazardous conditions on the track, and the cars must slow down immediately, maintaining their position and yeilding to safety vehicles. The green flag restarts the race. Passing Flag The blue flag with a yellow stripe signals slower cars to yield to faster traffic. Pit Flag The black flag instructs the driver to proceed to the pits on the next lap and follow the instructions of the race officials. Disqualification Flag The black flag with a white cross signals disqualification. Checkered Flag Signals that the practice session, qualification attempt, or race is over. The leader is declared the winner.
