Day 6: Hollywood Poker/Team Mosler Drivers: Troy Hanson Route: Las Vegas, Shelby, Lake Havasu, San Diego The morning started out with what was supposed to be a visit from an A/C tech, but he never showed up. I was later told that we needed to go to him. That being said, I drove over to the Shelby HQ located near Las Vegas Speedway. They had a breakfast set up and we had the chance to tour the Shelby facilities. David Green (organizer of the Bullrun) then stated we had a track event at Shelby’s proving ground. I decided to take out the Lotus Exige instead of the Mosler, because I heard through the grapevine that we would be at California Speedway the following day running the infield road course. CA Speedway is my home track and I’ve raced there on several occasions back when I ran the Rolex Grand American Series. So I decided to save the car for then and run a car built specifically for the track. The nimble, 1.8L Lotus was killing everything on the track, even the Porsche Turbos, which had over 200 more horsepower. The new Exige has 190hp, sticky tire and a lot of downforce, so you could go flat out in most areas where other cars had to ease off the throttle or even brake. After the session, it was decision time. I had heard the temps going through the desert exceed 120 degrees. Which meant the air temps in the car would probably be upwards of 140 degrees. In one of my few moments of clarity, I decided to put the car on a flatbed and ship it CA Speedway. There was no way my body could handle another day with those kinds of temps. In doing so, I withdrew from competition, but would be around to see another day. Some of the crew from Destination X took me to LA, where for the first time in a week I slept in my own bed and got good nights sleep. When I weighed myself I was at 160 pounds – at the beginning of the Run I was 174.
