Day 7: Hollywood Poker/Team Mosler Drivers: Troy Hanson, Ann Hagen Route: San Diego, California Speedway, Beverley Hills A proper nights sleeps was exactly what I needed. I went to bed around 8:00 and woke up 12 hours later, high tailed it to California Speedway to the flatbed that had my Mosler. He was there when I arrived and we unloaded it. Upon firing up the engine, the car sounded funny – rough. It soon began to overheat and ultimately shut down. I was pissed – this is the one event that I wanted to do. I mean a pro driver, in the fastest car on the Run, come on, what could be better than. We tried and tried to get it going but to no avail. We later found out that in transport an engine belt snapped – NOTE: flatbeds are designed to transport large, heavy machinery….not ultra-lightweight supercars. A friendly face, Ann Hagen noticed my frustration and asked if I wanted company and it made me feel a bit better. We still needed a car to finish the Run, and realized I did have a Volvo S60R Evolve (Supercharged Monster) loaned to us by Evolve, which we drove to the Beverly Hilton. There at the finishline a weeks worth of excitement seemed to come together in one spot. All the participants and cars, both battered to some extend were there celebrating the 3500+ journey that brought together some of the most unique people and vehicle. It is almost bittersweet, you’re spent, but you don’t want it to end. Though we weren’t pushing for a win, this year was more enjoyable because I got the chance to see things I would have normally skipped and passed by. It’s amazing when you slow down a bit, how the world seems to come in focus. I will always treasure this year’s Run mainly for the new friends I made and you know who you are. I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend and week. Highlights:
- Police Escort
- 200+ run
- New friends
- Seeing America
- Driving the most bad-ass car in the rally (Mosler)
- Racing Carl Lewis
- Posting the fastest time on the dragstrip – although I didn’t win the award (I guess it’s because I race professionally)
Lowlights:
- Canada
- Nearly dying from heat stroke
- Not finishing in the Mosler
