Biography

Rich Sommer is a really nice guy who is best known as Harry Crane the 1960s nice-guy media buyer turned Head of Television on AMC's multi-award winning drama series Mad Men. Rich recently celebrated Mad Men's second Golden Globe award for Best Drama as well as his 2009 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series which he shares with cast mates Bryan Batt (La Cage Aux Folles), Alison Brie, fellow HollywoodPoker celebrity player Michael Gladis (Third Watch), Jon Hamm (We Were Soldiers), Aaron Hart, Christina Hendricks (Kevin Hill), January Jones (We Are Marshall), Vincent Kartheiser (Angel), Mark Moses (Big Momma's House 2), Elisabeth Moss (The West Wing), Kiernan Shipka, John Slattery (Desperate Housewives), and Aaron Staton (The Nanny Diaries).

A Midwesterner though and through, he was born in Ohio, raised in Minnesota, got his college degree from Concordia and is a Case Western Reserve alum with a MFA (Master of Fine Arts – theatre/performing arts). He studied improv at the Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis and the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York. He also went on to start the improv group Slush Puppies. Besides comedy improv, Rich has extensive stage experience as Todd in Far Away, Mike in A Lie of the Mind and William Gibbs in Off the Map to name just a few – his most recent project being Jacob's Ladder written by Dennis Bailey and David Mixner.

He has several national commercials to his credit, which marked his transition from stage to television screen. Rich has appeared on The Office, Law & Order and Without a Trace and made his feature film debut was as Anne Hathaway's drinking buddy Doug in The Devil Wears Prada.

Besides helming the responsibility of dedicated family man to his lovely wife Virginia and Elmo-adoring toddler Bea, Rich is also an extraordinarily skilled card player.

What's new with Rich Sommer?
 
Of late, Rich has been busy on the set The Storm an NBC miniseries about a man-made weather experiment that goes awry. The Storm features a cast of television favorites, including Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Treat Williams (Everwood), James Van Der Beek (Dawson's Creek), Teri Polo (Meet the Parents), David James Elliott (JAG), Marisol Nichols (24), Emmy winner John Larroquette (Boston Legal) and Luke Perry (Beverly Hills, 90210). Fans will be able to catch Rich in upcoming indie sci-fi flick Radio Free Albemuth which is currently in post production.
