Roulette

Overview

Roulette is the most classic casino game of all. And it's so easy to play!

The object of Roulette is to successfully bet on individual numbers, the color of a number, whether the number is odd or even, or a section of numbers. A small white ball is then rolled in the opposite direction to a spinning wheel consisting of 37 numbers in the European version (one zero) or 38 numbers in the American version (one zero and one double zero). When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, all bets are settled.

Bets and payouts

The Roulette table has two separate betting parts - the number layout and the outside chances

The number layout consists of numbers 1 to 36, a zero and a double zero (American Roulette only). The zero and the double zero play exactly the same way as all the other numbers but are not included in any outside chances bets.

Outside chances is the common name of the twelve outside chances bets divided into two separate types of bets: six 1 to 1 bets (red, black, odd, even, high numbers and low numbers), and six 2 to 1 bets (three columns bets and three dozen bets).

Number bets
Playing the numbers is easy and can be very rewarding. After deciding which numbers to play there are several options available. The easiest bet is to simply place a chip straight up on the number. By doing so, you play that number only. Other options include splitting the bet between two connecting numbers (e.g. 1-2 or 6-9), playing corners by placing the bet in the crosshair of four numbers, betting on streets (three numbers in a row, e.g. 4 to 6), or playing a sixline which is a double street.

You can place number bets on 0 and 00 just like on any other number. The payout is exactly the same.

Note: European Roulette features two special street bets: 0-1-2 and 0-2-3. American Roulette features three special street bets: 0-1-2, 0-00-2, and 00-2-3.

Number bets payouts and maximum bets
Bet name Numbers Max bet Payout
Straight up Single number 5 chips 35 to 1
Split Two adjacent numbers 5 chips 17 to 1
Corner A quadrant of numbers 5 chips 8 to 1
Street A row of three numbers 5 chips 11 to 1
Sixline Two rows of three 5 chips 5 to 1
European house special 0-1-2-3 5 chips 8 to 1
American house special 0-00-1-2-3 5 chips 6 to 1

Outside chanced bets
By playing outside chances bets you cover a large amount of numbers in just one bet. The outside chances bet can be divided into two categories: those that pay 1 to 1 and those that pay 2 to 1.

1 to 1 bets include the color bet red/black, the even bet even/odd and the hilo bet high/low. By making a 1 to 1 bet, you cover 18 numbers. All 2 to 1 bets cover 12 numbers.

Note: All outside chances bets lose on 0 and 00.

Outside chances bets payouts and maximum bets
Name Numbers Max bet Payout
Color bet Red or Black 15 chips 1 to 1
Even bet Even or Odd 15 chips 1 to 1
High / Low 1 - 18 or 19 - 36 15 chips 1 to 1
Column bet Row 34, 35 or 36 15 chips 2 to 1
Dozen bet 1 - 12, 13 - 24 or 25 - 36 15 chips 2 to 1

Bet example
By spreading various types of number bets across the layout you not only spread the risks but also face some potentially huge wins if luck strikes.

Say your favorite number is 8 and you cover it with a straight up bet, a split bet, a street bet and a corner bet. You spin the wheel and 8 hits. Your total win will then be 35+17+11+8 = 71 times the amount of one chip! So if you placed these bets using $1 chips, an initial bet of $4 suddenly turned into $71 - plus the four winning chips left on the layout! Not bad.

You can also combine outside chances with number bets. One example of this would be to play a rather large bet on red, and a small straight up bet on zero as cover. Just in case.

By looking at the wheel you can also make a bet on adjacent numbers which cover a specific 'slice' of the wheel.
