Craps

Overview

Craps is known for its flexibility and wide variety of playable bets. Each roll of the dice in a game of Craps represents an opportunity to place bets with various risks and rewards. When playing Craps it must be appreciated that not all rolls are the same, and that not all bets are available on each roll.

Note: All rolls count, even those instances where, for example, the dice end up on top of each other.

Sessions
A game of Craps is divided into sessions. You don't have to wait for a session to end before placing bets.

Come out roll
A session begins with the come out roll, where only some of the bets are available.

During the come out roll the puck on the table is marked "OFF".

The first player who arrives at the table is known as the shooter. But before the come out roll can be made, the shooter must first make a Line bet.

There are also other pre-session bets available but they will be discussed in the Bets and payouts section.

The Line bet is important because it marks the start of a session and stays on the table, potentially during several rolls, until it either wins or loses. A line bet cannot be retracted or added to once a session is under way.

Setting the point
If the outcome of the come out roll is a 7 or 11, you win and the round is over before it started. If you roll a 2, 3, or 12 that's a Craps and you lose: again, it's over before it started. Any other number becomes the Point. The purpose of the Come Out roll is to set the Point, which can be any of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. When the Point is set, the puck on the table is marked "ON" and is placed above the Point number printed on the table.

Thereafter, if the puck on the table is marked "ON" and a 7 is rolled, and there is more than one player at the table, the next player becomes the shooter.

All line bets remain until they either win or lose. But although they remain on the layout, as soon as the point has been set, all line bets are transformed into another set of bets - point bets.

After the point is set
After the point is set, the basic objective in Craps thereafter is for the shooter to win by rolling the Point again before rolling a 7. If the Point is rolled, the shooter wins and the round is over. If the shooter rolls 7, the bet is lost and the round is over. If the roll is neither the Point nor 7, the round continues and the dice keep rolling.

Session end
As soon as a line bet or point bet wins or loses, the current session ends and a new one begins with a new come out roll.

Once you get the hang of the line and point bets and the basic session plays you are ready to move on to all the other exciting Craps bets, as described in Bets and payouts.

Bets and payouts

Line bet
Can only be placed on come out rolls.

The line bet consists of two opposite bets. You either place chips in the Pass Line bet field or in the Don't Pass Bar field.

Win Lose Bet returned Payout
Pass line 7, 11 2, 3, 12 - 1 to 1
Don't pass 2, 3 7, 11 12 1 to 1

Any other outcome of the roll initiates a session and the number rolled becomes the point number. A white marker is placed above the point number in the number bets field.

Example
John arrives at the table and places a $5 bet in the pass line field. He rolls the come out roll and a six and a one come up, totalling 7. His pass line bet wins and the session ends.

He then opts to play the same pass line bet and rolls a new come out roll. This time hitting a 5 and a 4, totalling 9. The nine does not end the session, so his bet stays in the pass line field and a marker is placed above the number 9 in the number bets field. The 9 is now the point number for that session.

Point bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

John places a $5 pass line bet and rolls the come out roll, which totals 9. The bet neither wins nor loses and the session continues with 9 now marked as the point number.

John's bet is still in place but is now in fact a point bet based on the point number 9.

For his bet to win, he needs to roll another 9 before he rolls a 7.

Had his initial line bet been a don't pass line bet he would need to roll 7 before rolling the point number.

Win Lose Payout
Pass line point bet point number 7 1 to 1
Don't pass point bet 7 point number 1 to 1

He cannot remove this bet before rolling the point number (a win) or a 7 (a loss) and thus ending the session.

Notice how the two initial pass line and don't pass line bets also work in opposite ways to point number bets.

Every time your line bet wins your winnings are added to your initial bet.

So in order to bring winnings home you must either RETRACT all your bets or decrease the now doubled line bet.

Come/Don't Come bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

Come bets are line bets and work just like pass/don't pass bets. But instead of being placed during come out rolls they are placed before each roll within a session, known as field rolls.

Win Lose Bet returned Payout
Come 7, 11 2, 3, 12 - 1 to 1
Don't come 2, 3 7, 11 12 1 to 1

If the come/don't come bet wins or loses it is either removed or doubled (you can retract it at any time).

If a come/don't come bet neither wins nor loses on the roll, it too is transformed into a point bet based on the number rolled.

But since that number will not be marked by a white marker, instead the bet is moved from the come/don't come field to the corresponding point bet field on the layout.

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all come/don't come bets are inactive.

Hardway bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

Hardway bets are based on the following double combinations.

Combination Payout
2 - 2 7 to 1
3 - 3 9 to 1
4 - 4 9 to 1
5 - 5 7 to 1

You win if the specific double is rolled before a seven or any other combination totalling that sum is rolled. Example: The hardway bet 2-2 loses if 1-3 is rolled.

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all hardway bets are inactive.

Field bet
Can be placed before any roll.

The field bet is a bet based on the total sum of a roll.

Win sum Lose sum Payout
3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 5 - 8 1 to 1
2 5 - 8 2 to 1
12 5 - 8 3 to 1

Big 6 and Big 8 bet
Can be placed before any roll.

These two bets work just like point bets. You are hoping for a 6 or an 8, depending on what number you choose, being rolled before a 7 is rolled.

Number rolled Lose Payout
6 (if bet on 6) 7 1 to 1
8 (if bet on 8) 7 1 to 1

Number bet
Can be placed before any roll.

Number bets are bets on a specific combination being rolled and can be found at the outmost right of the layout, mixed with the hardway bets. If the combination is not matched on the following roll, the bet is lost. (Notice how this differs from the hardway bets which do not necessarily win or lose on each roll.)

The "Any Craps" bet wins if a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled. The 'Seven' bet wins on any combination that totals 7.

Specific combination Payout
1 + 1 and 6 + 6 30 to 1
1 + 2 and 5 + 6 15 to 1
Any Craps: 2, 3 or 12 7 to 1
seven (total of 7) 4 to 1

C-E bet
Can be placed before any roll.

The C-E bet is located in between the line bets field and the number bets field. This is a one roll bet that either wins or loses on the roll that follows.

Sum Payout
2, 3 or 12 3 to 1
11 7 to 1
All other Loss

Place bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

A place bet is a bet that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 will be rolled before a 7 is rolled. Each bet covers one of the numbers. Bets are placed in the narrow field just below the point bet number area.

Bet on Bet against Payout
4 or 10 7 9 to 5
5 or 9 7 7 to 5
6 or 8 7 7 to 6

Any other outcome other than a winning place bet number or a 7 leaves the bet untouched.

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all place bets are inactive.

Buy bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

A buy bet is a bet that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 will be rolled before a 7 is rolled.

By picking one of these numbers, and placing a chip in the point number area for that number, you hope to roll that number before a 7 is rolled. The payout varies depending on the likelihood of the number you picked being rolled before a 7.

You can remove a buy bet at any time.

Bet on Bet against Payout
4 or 10 7 2 to 1
5 or 9 7 3 to 2
6 or 8 7 6 to 5

Commission:All winning buy bets are charged a 5% commission. Payouts are calculated after commission has been charged.

For example, John places a $100 Buy Bet on 10 (pays 2 to 1). He wins and $5 is charged from his original bet leaving $95. The payout is then $95 x 2 = $190. Thus he nets $185 from the bet.

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all buy bets are inactive.

Lay bet
Cannot be placed on come out rolls.

A lay bet is a bet that a 7 is rolled before number 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.

By picking one of these numbers, and placing a chip in the field above the Point number area, the aim is to roll a 7 before the number picked. The payout varies depending on the likelihood of a 7 being rolled before the number you picked.

You can remove a Lay bet at any time.

Bet on Bet against Payout
7 4 or 10 1 to 2
7 5 or 9 2 to 3
7 6 or 8 5 to 6

Commission:All winning Lay bets are charged a 5% commission.

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all lay bets are inactive.

Taking / laying line bet odds
Can only be placed in conjunction with a line bet.

You can place a take or lay odds bet by making an additional bet behind your line bet after the come out roll has been rolled and a point number has been established.

Which bet you make depends on whether your initial bet was a pass line bet (take odds) or a don't pass bet (lay odds).

You take/lay odds by adding chips behind your initial line bet on the layout.

How large a take/lay odds bet you can make is calculated by multiplying your line bet with a set factor.

A take odds bet wins if the point number is rolled before a 7; the lay odds bet wins if a 7 is rolled before the point number. Just like the initial line bets.

Taking odds - roll point number before 7
Point number Payout Maximum Bet
6 or 8 6 to 5 3 x Pass line bet
5 or 9 3 to 2 3 x Pass line bet
4 or 10 2 to 1 3 x Pass line bet

Laying odds - roll 7 before point number
Point number Payout Maximum Bet
6 or 8 5 to 6 3.6 x Don't Pass line bet
5 or 9 2 to 3 4.5 x Don't Pass line bet
4 or 10 1 to 2 6 x Don't Pass line bet

Taking/laying come bet odds
Can only be placed in conjunction with a come bet.

You can place a take or lay odds bet by adding chips on top of your initial come/don't come bet after the come out roll has been rolled and a point number has been established.

So as soon as a point number has been established you can make the take/lay odds bet.

Which one you make depends on whether your initial bet was a come bet (take odds) or a don't come bet (lay odds).

The bet is placed by making an additional bet on top of your come bet, which is placed on the point bet field.

How large a take/lay odds bet you can make is calculated by multiplying your line bet with a set factor.

A take odds bet wins if the point number is rolled before a 7; the lay odds bet wins if a 7 is rolled before the point number. Just like the initial come bets.

Taking odds - roll point number before 7
Point number Payout Maximum Bet
6 or 8 6 to 5 2 x Come bet
5 or 9 3 to 2 2 x Come bet
4 or 10 2 to 1 2 x Come bet

Laying odds - roll 7 before point number
Point number Payout Maximum Bet
6 or 8 5 to 6 2.4 x Don't Come bet
5 or 9 2 to 3 3 x Don't Come bet
4 or 10 1 to 2 4 x Don't Come bet

Note: If the point number or a 7 is rolled, the session ends. The next roll is a new come out roll, during which all come/don't come odds bets are inactive.
